Straight from ELC to Max Term
Based on his continued development the past three years, and consistent stretches of being the second most important forward behind Aho this year, I think Jarvis will get locked up to an 8 year deal this summer.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sharcuda22</b></div><div>That’s true, but Granlund had succcess before PIT, which I believe was more of a bad fit system wise than it was an indictment on the player. KK is also a similar profile to players Grier likes to pick up, but he definitely went overboard this season which has led to us being beyond bad, and KK’s contract is very scary, and could prevent players like Bystedt and Edstrom from their places when the time comes. Given the nice buyout structure I would say no more than a 2nd probably to dump him, but it could be less depending on other pieces of the deal vs whether or not the canes are OK with the buyout. I’ve seen other people say 3-5th round picks but that seems too cheap for my taste.</div></div>
Maybe something in the ballpark of KK, CAR's '24 3rd, and a couple of 4th-6th round picks (Canes have plenty to choose from in the next 3 years) for the signing rights to Chmelevski? CAR sold off their '25 and '26 3rds previously otherwise you could maybe send two 3rds.

KK Is a Goner
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sharcuda22</b></div><div>The timeline that the sharks are operating on is just different. Grier has indicated multiple times the plan is to start to try and win in 2-3 years, so KK contract is counter intuitive. But the main issue is the sharks cant have another year where they are THIS bad, that will be detrimental to the developing players at the club, so i imagine our focus would be on the vets, meaning this deal would have to be worth it for the sharks to accept, and this is not it. KK’s contract is a huge risk, especially considering what it might mean for our internal cap structure moving forward. He should be a 3 mil player on one of the best teams in the league with all the support in the world. the sharks can give him none of that so we shouldn’t assume he can be better. Gonna have to put assets in the trade to dump him, but given his cheap buyout i imagine the canes would do that first.</div></div>
What cost would you put on taking KK? The one counter argument I'd give you is that the Sharks can give KK the opportunity that no other team really can while they're in their rebuild, which is more TOI and better PP opportunities that he doesn't see in CAR. Part of the reason he looks worse statistically than he probably is in actuality is the opportunities given/not given with the Canes that he could get on a rebuilding team like San Jose. A current comparison that comes to mind is Granlund's success with SJS with increased opportunity that he never really had with PIT and to some extent with NSH too.

The Sharks won't be competitive for a playoff spot until the end of this decade which is right around the time KK's deal will expire (29-30). With the cap continuing to rise, you'll still need to hit the cap floor going forwards even as you finally tear down the pieces around the team. On top of that, obviously the sharks will start to bring in some of their younger kids in the next couple seasons but you still need players to be in your lineup to hold you over, and while he hasn't lived up to his draft spot KK is not a bad player, he's a decent 3rd liner who at 23 still has potential to be a 50 point center in the league. If he doesn't work out in San Jose, the buyout is very cheap, long, but very cheap.

I agree and don't think they'll try another offersheet after how the Aho/KK series went (regardless of how KK's been playing, they initiated the conflict and ended up losing both players), however if they did they probably would have to offer Necas $8-10m on a 1 year deal with an extension worked out beyond that similar to how the KK offersheet went where you drastically overpay for 1 year with a long term extension figured out ahead of time. And for MTL, they have so many RFAs in the next 2-3 years that it'd be tough to proactively sign every player before expiry, there's a lot of choices for a retaliatory OS that CAR could choose from.

Probably Bunting, 1st, and two prospects one being close to NHL ready, maybe a 3rd on top of all that for Guentzel and Smith (likely both 50% retained).

What other RHD is Toronto going to go get that fits in their cap structure and will come relatively cheap? If they move a 1st for Walker they also have to dump a salary which complicates things even if there's retention on Walker. When DeAngelo has played this year with Skjei on the 2nd pair he's been pretty good in that top-4 role, and he's been very professional about being scratched for 2/3 of the year so I'd say the attitude issues should be behind him (he wasn't traded from CAR the first time due to attitude, that was purely due to financials). The main reason he isn't playing in the Canes lineup is due to him and Orlov having poor chemistry together and Chatfield playing really solid as the 6D, Tony may be a lot of things but he's not a bad player. If he was traded to TO he'd play PP1 and third pair minutes with either McCabe or Benoit as a D-partner to help shelter him at even strength.

Check Down Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>why do the leafs want another defender who cant defend?</div></div>
Regardless of whether or not it was the right move, they brought in Klingberg to run PP1 and take some of the pressure off Reilly to play in that role at the start of the year. Going into the playoffs, you get a RHD puck moving defenseman who is more than capable of running and distributing on a PP with Matthews, Nylander, Marner, etc. for slightly over league minimum while only giving up a 5th. The leafs don't have a lot of capital to trade out and certainly wouldn't do so without a player with multiple years left on a deal or an extension in place for an expiring contract (in either case they'd likely need to move a contract out to make the cap work). This gives them a cheap option to run a PP that could be the best of all teams in the postseason. Plus you could pair him with McCabe on the 3rd Dpair to shelter him at even strength with Benoit as the extra D.

Even with the 1.5 million retention per season by EDM, CAR is still eating 14 million over the next 4 years so Edmonton is probably missing an additional first from that package going to Carolina. For reference Marleau cost the Leafs a 1st for one year at ~6 million (which ended up being Jarvis), not to mention I don't see many teams wanting to "help" EDM dump cap considering the streak they're on currently even in the Eastern conference.

I'd agree with most things you stated, as for Lemieux and Stolarz, I looked at those more as replaceable positions/dollar amounts so you could interchange another player or goalie for the same usage. What contract values and term do you think Skjei and Necas end up with (even if not from the Canes)?

Fantilli is the 1C of the future for sure, but I don't think the front office envisions Johnson playing C in the NHL. Voronkov has been a nice addition and has continued to get better over the course of the year so maybe he could be the future 2C, In the description I also mentioned building a trade package around Necas instead of KK so maybe that'd be a better fit if Voronkov does solidify himself over the remainder of the season as the 2C. I don't see any team eating Elvis' contract so you may be stuck with him in net and his cap hit unless they buy him out.

I'd argue this proposed team will be just as likely to win a cup in 24-25 as they are this year in 23-24. Jiricek only adds to the "contender" status not just in this year but in the long term future of the team as well and the emergence of Drury as a budding 2C with offensive production while still being defensively responsible has made KK an expendable asset when Ponomarev or a veteran center on a cheaper 1-year deal could play effectively the same role that KK is playing right now. KK is not a bad player by any means, he's just played his way down the lineup while other guys have increased their own stock.

Drury is missing on this roster and I think FUS may need one more year of development before jumping up to the NHL. Skjei and Pesce will make more and there's a good chance only one of them will be back next year. Also Martinook will get more as well.

Bunting and Noesen could be swapped to maintain that duo and then have Necas providing playmaking and speed on the line. Drury and Noesen have had great chemistry together dating back to Chicago when they won the Calder.
