Oilers go all in for Cup Run

Created by: Gag1
Team: 2023-24 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2023
Published: Jul. 17, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Oilers need to improve their defense and goaltending. While Skinner was a rookie of the year candidate, he struggled at times in the playoffs. The Oilers time is now so they have to take their shot even if it means paying a high price for Hellebuyck (as a potential rental).

I think the Jets would consider this because they get a starter back with 4 years term and Campbell is a great team guy that would help to rebuild a positive culture in Winnipeg. I think Campbell may waive his NTC to become a #1 again (*but this could kill the deal). The Jets also get 2 strong prospects and a 1st round pick.

For me the Oilers have to truly go for it and show #97 and #29 they are committed to doing what it takes to win now.

The big weakness is the depth and loss of top prospects. What would you do?

I think you are forgetting that Campbell had a .888 save percentage. Number one goaltenders don’t post below league average numbers. And with that contract, he has negative value.

And the pieces don’t really appeal to Winnipeg either (other than the 1st). Don’t need more wingers and don’t need more ld.

RE: Campbell. It is well documented that he had a rough regular season last year, but he looked much better in the Playoffs. His Play and numbers prior to this in Toronto were pretty good (hence he got the contract - career 910 save percentage). The reason I thought it could work for the Jets is that they will likely move on from and/or move Dillon and/or Demelo depending on their position at the deadline. I could also see them potentially buying out Schmidt after this season - depending on his play.

What would be your ask for Hellebuyck be from Edmonton (or other teams)?

I'll start off by saying it's "no" from EDM in my eyes. If I were to entertain the trade concept, I'd say it'd have to include 50% retention on Helly so EDM could truly stock up for the run. Also, can't say I'd have even the slightest bit of interest in Stanley being included in the trade.

FWIW, I can also see WPG fans not liking it.

Give up 4 years of Jack Campbell, For one year of Connor Hellebuyck who made is abundantly clear that he won't sign long term in Canada. Yeah that makes total sense. shakes head

True - its a lot to give up from the Oilers perspective. But Skinner is the goaltender for the future in Edmonton not Campbell. This moves helps them to free up Campbell's cap space and it gives them a true #1 for the playoffs, noting that Goaltending has been an issue in the playoffs for a few seasons now... But it is a gamble and a high price to pay.

Giving up Campbell would not hold me back. Giving up the prospects might.

There's not enough there to dump Campbell and return that much.

Edmonton is better off running it back with Skinner and Campbell and utilizing those assets to strengthen other parts of the lineup.

Those prospects have little value to WPG, Campbell/Brossoit 50/50 tandem could be interesting but that trade doesn’t interest Winnipeg, more would need to be added/changed
