Making Cam work

Description
Credit to dk325 for posting this first.

The potential of bringing Cam back had crossed my mind, but after seeing dk's post, now my brain juices are really pumping and I want to see it happen.

I wasn't even a big Cam fan while he was here because even though he could score, he was not a good playmaker, he was undersized, and the scoring he did do was streaky, so in my mind I always thought he was overpaid and overhyped as a top-line, primary scorer.

However, with this trade, he would come back at a much more palatable cap hit and play in a role where he wouldn't be relied on to be a primary scorer for this team. He'd be a good presence in the locker-room to help some of our young wingers, has great chemistry with all the vets, and is highly committed to the city. If PHI was willing to retain 50%, I think it'd be a great deal for CBJ.

From PHI's perspective, they are rebuilding, so they pick up a good soldier on defense in Peeke who can eat shots, a young player and a couple picks, while opening up a roster spot for one of their younger players.

With only has two years left on his deal and with the retention, CBJ would have plenty of space to re-sign Johnson, Marchenko, Texier next summer. Then Cam's cap hit would drop off before needing to give big deals to Jiricek or Fantilli. I would also anticipate Boqvist being traded next summer as Jiricek moves into his 2RD spot, which should hopefully bring back a 1st or 2nd round pick and open up a little more cap space.

I really think this could actually be a good move for both teams.

Additional Details:
Pyyhtia is a young center that has shown some promise. Good at finding the soft areas to pot rebounds.

He's only 21 and wouldn't cost PHI a roster spot, but if they'd rather, they swap him out for Bemstrom, Angle, Berni, Christiansen or Bjork.

Bemstrom needs to go the other way and been saying this for awhile. He's Wild Bill 2.0 that's gonna break out into a top 6 somewhere but not here. Since Philly is going to take town he would be a perfect winger to them to try in the next 2/3 years while waiting for Michkov to arrive. Cam here would add even more leadership with Gudbranson, Kuraly and Boone in the locker room with the young kids and get even people like Laine to play to the best of their abilities. Also if he's on the 3rd line with Sillinger another experienced guy who would help him out as he played better with more experienced players on his side.

Normally I get mad at bringing aging players in on the wings since we need the kids to play but at 2 years and him being a 3rd line winger...BRING HIM HOME

I don't hate Bemstrom, but I don't see any comparison between him and Wild Bill. PHI can have him if they want. They could swap out Pyyhtia for any of the players I mentioned in the trade notes.

I still have hope for Sillinger, but I'm leaning towards bust with him until he proves otherwise. Not saying he can't figure it out, but he's got a lot of work to do if he's going to make it.

And I wouldn't say we need kids to play. The best players can play, and it's good to have youth pushing from behind to keep guys motivated. Organizational depth is a good problem, and I'm fine with China and Sillinger tearing up the AHL until they take someone's job.

Agreed, I think Milano is a much better comparison. Bemstrom could break out in a way and put up decent numbers on a bad team with more minutes, but I'd be shocked if he ever got to the level of impact as Karlsson for 1 year, let alone longer team.

I don't mind a Cam return, he's a sneaky good defensive forward and penalty killer with some scoring touch. He'd be great in the bottom-6, yet expensive even at half-retained.

That said, I don't agree with this value. He's coming off a pretty major neck surgery and is already 34, he's not a cap dump but he's also not a player you pay a bunch of assets to take a chance on. Cam for Peeke, 1-for-1, sign me up. Anything beyond that will probably just look really bad by December.

Jarmo has a history of good 1-for-1 deals - especially with PHI. I could definitely see that.

As @dk325 pointed out in an earlier ACGM, Cam is playing in the Cap City summer league, so I think it's safe to assume the neck has healed. Of course, reinjury can always happen, but at 50% retained the financial risk is much less. Even if he has to sit on LTIR, he's still a great guy to have around.
