Canes decline. Carolina can offer sheet Bouchard and get most of the assets back in a Pesce deal

I don't see Pesce signing an extension in Edmonton (at least not without a massive overpay) so in 1 year's time you're left with nothing but a late 1st. You can't come close to replacing Bouchard with that late 1st.

So Edmonton declines. It doesn't make them better now and makes them markedly worse next year and beyond.

They might not have a choice. if they can't get him signed he is getting traded.

Why wouldn't they be able to get him signed? He's an RFA who doesn't have Arbitration rights. They'll find a deal.

It's going to have to wait on McLeod's contract/ award though, because they don't know how much they have in the budget until then.

I think Bouchard will be signed within a week of McLeod, who will have a contract August 4th at the latest.

could easily find a more valuable trade for Bouchard. Young top 4 RD with rights controlled VS ageing top 4 RD soon to be FA and a late first

So your argument is term and team control? Even if we ignore the fact that Pesce is BY FAR the better player, Pesce's still on the right side of 30, he's one of the best DFD in the NHL, and he's shown time and again he can carry a defensive pairing. Bouchard's 5v5 offense is inferior to Pesce's analytically, transition he's stronger than Pesce, but then you get to the defensive game and it's not close. I've said this before I'll say it again. I think it would need to be Bouchard + for Pesce

you don't think term and team control are important factors in trade value? Pesce has only gotten over 30 points once in his career he is way defensive is better then Bourchard, But Bouchard Offensive is way better and he still young enough to improve defensively also he is paired with Ekholm/Nurse two great shut down guys who would run Edmonton PP without him? Nurse(5 LH shots would limit the PP)

Interesting you note that, Pesce's 5v5 offense is stronger than Bouchards. At least analytically. You point to point totals, but refuse to acknowledge that Bouchard plays with 2 of the best players on the planet where Pesce is on a team whose best player has never reached the 90 point mark, forget the 150 McDavid did this last season. Pesce's better offensively and defensively, where Bouchard is better is transitionally moving the puck up and down the ice, and on the powerplay. Pesce at this stage is a top pairing D man that can play 30+ minutes a night. Bouchard is best served to a 2nd pairing role right now.

Top pairing defensemen score more then 30 points regularly, I don't care about your analytics because you you ignore the most important metric. Points with it comes to offensive and Carolina is plently deep enough to give a top pairing defensemen more then 30 points. Bouchard generates offensive Pesce doesn't plain and sample.

If you are trying to use points to justify defensemen, this conversation is over. With that logic, Jaccob Slavin is not a top pairing defenseman, and he gets Norris votes

Canes would do this but doubt oil would. Seems like bad asset mgmt to lose Bouchard for a year of pesce. He could extend there but I would imagine he’d rather stay in the states on east coast and I think it would also be a tighter squeeze for oil to extend him long term for what he’s looking for.

Slavin score regularly over 30 points and had a few seasons over 40 points, so I think my justification sticks.

so he plays 2nd PP on a worst power place it would be huge down grade for Edmonton on the power play

I don't think Bouchard makes the pp as much as Nugent Hopkins does.
