Leafs Trade For Karlsson

Created by: DJP1117
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 24, 2023
Published: Jul. 24, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let me make this CLEAR, I do NOT WANT EK on the Leafs, I think whoever gets him will have immediate buyers remorse if they pay anything close to what people are suggesting.

However I wanted to show how "I VALUE EK" in a trade. Im seeing crazy trades where they want Nylander PLUS or Nylander on Youtube Videos , or Shane Wright PLUS, or Pesce a first PLUS, Its crazyness....Heres what I would say EK would be worth IMO as of right now all things considered.

Not focused on making subsequent trades to be cap compliant just wanted to share what I THINK Karlson should be getting... Not some crazy trades involving Nylander or Pesce.

Not only is the value way off, but EK65 to Toronto has the same chance of happening as McDavid to the Islanders has. Its not. At least right now. The cap isnt working, it makes no sense for the Leafs and the Leafs wont want to part ways with what SJS wants

What an absymal offer that Pitt, Carolina and Seattle beat with ease.

Karlsson's value is hard to pin down because it's complicated and unprecedented... but one way of evaluating it is thinking if it is worth it or not for San Jose to trade him for the said offer (is it enough to benefit the franchise?). This one doesn't do it. And it looks like what teams have been offering Grier has not satisfied him so we're left to conclude they are looking for more than this or being really strict about something dumb like 20% max retention.

edit: IMO though your offer could be tweaked and I'd think it'd be worth it to SJ, such as more (better) picks and prospects. Doesn't have to be Nylander

carolina's out now after signing tda, seattle's interest has reportedly cooled. san jose have pretty obviously overplayed their hand here and won't be getting much back, with that being said i think he ends up in pittsburgh not toronto

Gotta think the silliness stops when Brodie refuses to waive to non playoff west coast playoff team. Same with Petry of the Pens.
Heck the Leafs don't have the cap for 5m Brodie never mind a 8m EK

dw san jose fans, those three first round picks and a blue chip prospect for a washed, $11.5m, 33 yo defenceman who doesn't play defence is surely coming any day now. any day now...

Good bid them up , makes it more sweet when they have the buyers remorse 2 years from now when theyre sitting with a 36 year old Karlsson with 8plus mil on the books lol.

The description clearly stated it was just a value trade and not what made sense to the Leafs or what the team would want. And the value is on par for a 33 year old dman with a ridiculous contract that will hamstring any team trading for him. Gio won the Norris 5 years ago and he's been on close to League minimum contracts ever since. Instant buyers remorse for whoever gets him.

Coming off a historical norris season is washed up. My god, boy, get a life.

fleury won the vezina and got dumped for nothing that very same offseason. believe it or not players with severe injury history and a steep downward trajectory for the last few years don't suddenly hit their peak at 33 and certainly don't sustain it through until they're 37 or whenever that awful contract expires. what actually happened is karlsson was finally let loose in a run-and-gun, all-offense system under david quinn where they quite frankly did not care if they conceded 8 goals every night or lost 60 games. he could work on a contender if he was heavily sheltered or paired with one of the best defensive defencemen in the league like deangelo with slavin, but without that elite babysitter next to him he'd drown like a toddler without water wings. you think teams are lining up to pay 3 first rounders for that?

what's happening now is san jose are finally realizing karlsson's value is the same as it was last off-season, close to nothing, and will end up keeping him and letting him play out his deal in california where his awful defence compliments the sharks who are trying to lose as many games as possible; because the return out there is so negligible its not even worth san jose getting rid of him.

sharks fans hilariously think karlsson's value is level with makar, in reality it's more like john klingberg. he'll play in san jose and get flipped at the 2027 deadline for a 2nd round pick if he hasn't already been ltiretired for the last two years by then.
