Toews Extension Guess

Created by: bcooke
Team: 2024-25 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2023
Published: Jul. 26, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Taking a guess at the Toews extension. Breakdown below:

8 yr x $7.15625M AAV
1 - $7.5M w/ NMC
2 - $7.5M w/ NMC
3 - $9.5M w/ NMC
4 - $9.5M w/ NMC
5 - $8M w/ NMC
6 - $5.5M w/ M-NTC (24 Team)
7 - $4.875M w/ M-NTC (16 Team)
8 - $4.875M w/ M-NTC (12 Team)

First 5 years is a 5x8.4M with full NMC. Trade protection starts to open up in year 6 aligning with Toews turning 36. Last 3 years (Age 36-38 seasons) at a discount due to age.

Used Avs most pro ready AHL/reserve players to fill depth roles. Would look at value UFA's to fill some of those roles as needed, but tough to project who actually hits UFA this far out.

If Toews comes in that low he is doing us a HUGE favor. I worry he will cost over 8. But man this looks tasty.

Just wanted to show there was room to go higher if they wanted. Really think the first 5 years are expensive. After age 36, I'm not sure what kind of discount to expect. But they have 3 years of term there to try and lower the AAV as much as Toews will agree to.

Starting at the age of 30,,, eight years seems like awful term. Getting rid of Manson at his full cap is going to be costly.

Agree on the first point. I don't think there is any chance Colorado goes 8 years. They may swallow and do 7, but 8 is extremely unlikely imo.

On Manson, I think it really depends on what he does this season. If he can stay healthy and play well, I think they get a 3rd or 4th for him. If not... Well, I don't really want to think about that. But maybe the Ducks take him back for free or something.

I agree as well. But 6 years from now, the entire core (excluded Makar and Byram) will be 33+. So approaching the end of true cup contender ability for guys like MacK/Rants/Val. But if the core is still going strong, the contract is structured in a way that you could send him to a cash strapped team if you needed to.

And Manson's value next summer really depends on what he does this year. If he isn't healthy again it could be expensive to move and they may have to move Girard instead. Depending on which one they can actually get a return on.

Why are so many people always trying to put Landy back in the line up so fast?
The specific surgery he just had will take the entirety of 2 years of recovery time for his new cartilage to fully mature before he can even try to push himself.
Trying to rush his recovery sooner then 2 years all but guarantees he'll never play another game in the NHL again since his new cartilage can't physically be fully matured faster.
23/24 = 0 games, 24/25 = 0 games, 25/26 he can finally train and push himself to try and get back to NHL ready.

TL DR don't need to trade Manson, put Landy back on LTIR .

completely agree with the first statement you made. We have a pretty good 5 year window, might as well bring that AAV down as much as possible to fit these guys into the group while we can. No team is a cup contender forever so you might as well win while you are. I see us having a bigger issue the following year with center depth but that issue can be dealt with after the parade.

This is an extremely pessimistic viewpoint. Everything I have seen was a 12-18 month recovery time which would be somewhere around December of '24. In that case, you have to plan on him coming off LTIR - which means one of the 4M+ salaries is getting dumped if you resign Toews. Better to do it around or before the time of the extension to maximize your return on the trade.

Now I'm not the biggest optimist on Landy's surgery, but if he can't return for at least a portion of 24-25, then I would expect it be more likely he retires (spends the rest of the contract on LTIR) than to play again starting in 25-26.

Because of both of those reasons, I wouldn't expect a Toews extension to get signed until after this season. At that point you have a much clearer picture on when/if Landy will return. That also allows you to trade one of Manson/Girard at the draft if you need to and clear room for the Toews extension to get done before July 1.

I mean nobody really knows, when he will be back or if he will come back. I think everyone shows is that if he comes back there has to be some major reconfiguring to fit his 7 mil back into the group, so we can't just start firing off contracts next year and then be 7 mil over the cap mid season if he comes off LTIR. Look at this year he thought he was coming back all year then handcuffed us with 7 mil of cap space heading into playoffs, which hurt us major for depth scoring.

Don’t know if Toews resigning in COL is in the cards here. Especially considering if he asks for fair market value (~8mil/per), he prices himself out of town. Or they have to give him a long term deal to get the AAV down and now they are stuck with him under contract at 35+
