Don't know why Carolina would do this. Necas extended is likely more valuable than Nylander extended. Necas is 3 years younger, he's faster, and Necas has actually played down the middle. Something Nylander hasn't done in forever. For only 15 points to get 3 years younger (Necas will likely grow past that anyway) while putting up comparable numbers to a guy playing with Matthews, Marner and Tavares? No thank you

Reread what I said. Most of his production was on the powerplay. He had 1 primary point at 5v5, a goal in game 4 I think it was of the Panthers series.

tax is somewhat offset by the difference in advertisement/etc deals in Toronto vs. Carolina though

It's not just about the taxes though in Toronto, I'm sure Nylander isn't going to want to take less just so that Matthews and Marner can maximize their next contracts. It appears that Matthews is taking "less" but on a short term deal.

The problem with nylander is his compete level is completely on his own terms - he is great at take aways and is up there in points, but he only shows moments of being the best player on the ice

I would love to see Teravainen back in Chicago but I can’t see Carolina giving him up for only a 3rd.

Nylander had 1 fewer EV point than Necas had total points in the playoffs, and Necas played 4 more games. I'll take EV (2g/6pt/11gp) and total (4g/10pt/11gp) over EV (3g/0 assists/15gp) and total (4g/7pt/15gp) every day of the week. Not to mention Nylander now has a 3 year consecutive track record of strong playoff performance at EV and total (I included those stats in the last comment).

TO can give the whole contract in bonus money which is as advantageous as lower taxes. Some argue it's even more beneficial. Getting all the money upfront allows investments that grow faster than taxes claw back.
