Pens 23-24

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2023

Description
I would really like to know how Buf fans feel about moving Olofsson. While knowing that Grandlund to aquire him is certainly not ideal and it was mainly to make the Pens cap compliant. I would think that he could be a third C for Buffalo in a pinch. I wouldn't mind adding additional picks to ensure the trade goes through and or even adding a player like Poulin though it really seems unlikely that he and any of the Pens "higher end" prospects are being shopped around at this time.

The other two trades are to also to help the Pens move out some of their surplus though with the recent Gus signing in MIN I wasn't too sure if the Wild would be looking to shop Fleury so that they could shed some additional cap space. (Maybe even a third team comes in and eats half of DeSmith's salary to make it more enticing for the Wild?)

Rutta could go to any team looking to add some experience on their back end though I'm sure he would be pretty cheap to aquire should the Pens be shopping him.

*I am unsure what to think about Karlsson atm and at this point I don't think the Pens are in any hurry to complete the deal for what SJ may be looking for in return. That trade could always be revisited at the deadline and or next year if Karlsson is still with the Sharks and or the Pens can look elsewhere for a No 2 RHD should they still be shopping Petry.

Less than zero reasons for the Sabres to make that trade.

BUF should reject. Fleury has a full NMC so he'll block anything Guerin tries to do, which would prevent the MIN trade. No idea what Verbeek will do but he seems like an idiot with his Gudas and Killorn deals that will probably be ugly day 1.

Buffalo doesn't need forwards, they would most likely just trade him for picks or prospects after Quinn comes back.

No interest in that. We have too many undersized forwards coming up as it is. Not to mention the bonus year of granlund at 5 million. Honestly, it looks like the Sabres are not making any changes before the season, so olofsson will continue to play at least until Quinn gets back, then maybe he gets moved out for whatever his market value is at the deadline.

Yeah, I never thought that Grandlund would be a viable option for BUF but wanted to find an alternative means to get rid of his Cap instead of buying him out even though that would most likely be the route the Pens will take should they want to get rid of his deal from their books.

And, with so many teams looking for money in/money out- trades, just getting picks for an underperforming winger making 5 million a year, is actually a big ask.

Granlund probably costs a 1st to move by himself.

Fleury said months ago he’s not waiving his full no move. And Granny will likely be bought out this weekend if the Karlsson deal doesn’t get done.

Sabres fans are trading Oloffson, because someone has to be moved to make for Kulich/Savoie and eventually Benson and VO is the odd men out. Now, with Quinn injury and him being out probably until January, there is no need to trade VO since said roster space is available.

Flleury is as the point of his career he does not want to move around. If there was a team Fleury would like to finish his career, and if that team would be qualifying for postseason play and would have cap space, the Penguins could be that team.

Olofsson will fill a need for the Sabres for the 2023-2024 season. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024. It would not be a bad idea to trade a second-round pick for Olofson and mid-round draft picks at the trade deadline. The Sabres would have Quinn back, will need to make room for players for a playoff run, and create room for better players in the 2024-2025 season. The Penguins would benefit from the mid-round draft picks to restock the farm, or work on bigger deals.

Sure, there will be talks, but you never know how season goes. But here, there is cap dump - Granlund included in the deal.

The Sabres can easily flip Granlund with a draft pick to another team needing to reach the cap floor.

And why would they do that ? Flip VO for Granlund and 2nd, to send Granlund with 3rd to Yotes as cap dump ? So basically you flipped VO for 30 draft spots in range 40-70 ? Pointless, considering that Yotes would take 10 mil cap dump for 3rd pick, which I doubt. Yotes would look for LITR contract, paid by insurance company to reach the cap floor if needed.
