The trade happened less than two days ago and I'm already sick of Canadiens fans sending Petry to Detroit for literally anything.

I feel exactly the same about Leafs fans constantly sending Lafferty, Jarnkrok and Timmins to the Pens for 2nd and 3rd round picks. Haha

i was also wondering the same if it would have been a better option for them.

Curious to see what wings fan think because i think it might have been a perfect deal for them.

You telling me bottom-6 guys aren't worth 2nd or 3rds?

Well, we've gotten two 2nd rounders, and another asking for one of our NHL caliber prospects in Soderblom.

well, lets say instead of holl and reimer, you get petry and desmith.

you save cap space, term AND get a second round pick and meh prospect. And the discussion is also open about who are the best players. i know petry is older, but i would say he was better than holl. it is a gamble for sure because you do not know how fast he can regress.

There is always such a rush to sign players and made trades around the July 1st. Some UFAs expecting more $$$ and term come mid July now have fewer options. Same with trades. Looks like the Wings "made their bed" with Holl and Reimer, at UFA, and now don't have the flexibility or need for a trade.
Gpmack. I like your suggestion of the trade. Yeah, I think the Wings would have been better off with the deal you proposed.

Good analysis. But I guess around July 1st, when there all kinds frantic signings, the trade talk just didn't come together for the Sharks/Pens/Wings. Holl....agree with you. I've been a Holl supporter for years but in the last two years, he had stretches where he lost NHL skating ability IMO. He was poor in the playoffs this season too. Best wishes to Holl in Detroit, he seemed to be popular guy with this teammates. But gotta think his new contract was a mistake by the Wings.

yeah i have the same assesment, i understand why the deal was not made back then. maybe he can turn it around. sometimes changing team does wonder.

At times Holl was under appreciated by Leaf fans. Holl played the tough minutes, usually against top lines and lots of PK time, with no PP time.
But I do worry about players, when they lose a step as I think Holl has done. When you can't skate as quickly, forecheckers are on you more, causing bad plays including turnovers.
How that gets turned around at age of 31....I'm kinda doubtful. By the way, happy for Reimer that he found another NHL contract. Another good guy to have on the team.

It doesn't save Detroit any cap it takes 1yr of term off but it almost doubles the 1st year and with the cap about to jump big next season it only helps Montreal.

Detroit
y1 $3.4 + $1.5M = $4.9M
y2 $3.4
y3 $3.4
Total $11.7

Montreal
y1 $6.25 + $1.8 + $905k = $8.995M
y2 $6.25
Total $15.25

right, i had the numbers for half rwtained petry in mind.

but i meant it instead of montreal doing the trade with pittsburg, it would have been detroit . the question is would they have been hapoier with petry, desmith, a second round pick or holl and reimer. ( i know itn the time of the signing the trade could not have been made, its only hypothetical.)
