The Gudbranson cap dump sweetens the Calgary pot to allow for Sillinger to be part of the package.

Not sure I see Tanev being worth a 1st round pick, but Calgary fans would know better.

I don’t really understand where Tanev fits in the Avs lineup. Is he a better option than Makar, Toews, Byram, Girard, or Manson? At best, he’s a 4/5 guy for the Avs when healthy. Don’t really see a fit here.

He'd be better than Byram for this year, IMO. I think that this is a pretty fantastic group:

Toews-Makar
Girard-Tanev
Byram-Manson

While I'd be interested to hear why you think Tanev would be a fit for COL, the Avs decline. Too much cap space even with the retention and they'll likely be more cautious with the draft picks moving forward as they need to eventually restock. Not saying the 2024 1st isn't in play, but it would have to get them a much better return than Tanev.

I don’t know if I’d fully agree with you. I also think Byram has another level to his game that he needs more ice time to hit consistently. There were times during the cup run that he was the best defenseman on the ice. When your teammates are Cale Makar and Devon Toews, that’s unreal. Who knows if he’ll hit ever hit that consistently, but that’s the dream.

But even if you argue that Tanev>Byram, I’m not sure if this is the best allocation of assets. That defense would be sick, but you only have 60 minutes in a game. In a playoff setting, Makar/Toews are both getting 25+. Girard and Byram ideally get 21-22ish. That doesn’t leave much ice time for Manson and Tanev. I think there’s a better way to deploy assets here (I.e., upgrading Drouin/Johansen) than making a super team on defense. I’d rather just get a cheap PK guy and spend elsewhere.

That's one way to piss off Gaudreau. 90% of the reason he signed there was Gudbranson. Their wives are best friends

Gudbranson had very little to do with Johnny signing in Columbus.

No he wanted to move to the states and saw the writing on the wall that tkachuck wanted out and the flames would be in for a rebuild. Gudbranson helped but wasn’t a big reason

Um lol what? There are literally multiple interviews and articles on this. He actually wanted to stay even after free agency opened up. His wife convinced him to go there.

I've seen him talk about Nash, Atkinson, Robinson, and Gudbranson influencing his decision as well as his enjoyment of the city in the past and the teams bright future as reasons for signing in Columbus. He has also talked about being closer to home, but not so close that all of his friends and family can drop in as they please which allows them to have some privacy still. He also made it very clear that his father's health and having missed his grandfather's funeral were very big reasons why he couldn't stay in Calgary anymore. I've yet to see him say that his wife convinced him to leave Calgary. Sounds about as flimsy as all of the rumors of him being a coke/meth head that seemed to conveniently spark up after he left Calgary.

Tanev would be nice for sure but that means something has to give (as others have illustrated) so unless it's part of a bigger situation it's a no from me. Also not really sure I'd be willing to part with a first for him at this stage even with retention.

And? You're gonna rely on Frank Seravalli as a source? The same Frank Seravalli who had another issue with putting words in a players mouth within the last few months? He has no idea what conversation went on between Gaudreau and his wife. It's bull**** speculation and the exact kind of bull**** speculation that continues to drive talented players away from Canadian hockey teams. Who would want to deal with the kind of media that tries to put your wife in the crosshairs of angry fans?

If his wife's relationship with Gudy's wife was such a big deciding factor, why was he about to sign with New Jersey before he changed course at the last minute? Seems like he never would have even started discussions with anyone else if keeping the wives together was such a big deal. It was indisputably a part of what helped make him comfortable with Columbus, but 90% is really pushing it.

Is Frankie boy bugging players cars now? What an absurd story. Even if he did take a car ride with his wife who knows what was said between the two. He’s referenced cam Atkinson as being a huge influence because he called cam up and cam said he should join the jackets even after he was a flyer. He said the fact that cam still lived in Columbus even after being traded said a lot
