No one traded for him because at his original cap hit he was overpaid. People acquiring him now will get him 75% cheaper so around 2.3m. Hes a 50th percentile WAR player and averages around 40 points so hes above average Dman in todays NHL. At 2.3 million, thats a bargain.

Another reason is that he has a 15 team no trade clause. And has publicly said he wants to be as close to Michigan as possible

I know the american school system is rough but god damn use some common sense here

You're missing a lot of details. Beyond the fact that teams have used 22 man rosters for mostly full seasons already:

1) The salary number (but not the roster number) includes Caufield, Monahan, Slafkovsky and Xhekaj, all of whom will be ready for training camp, hence the 26 players.
2) Price is LTIRetired, Montreal always intended to use LTIR this season.
3) The preference for Montreal is to use the in-season LTIR instead of the off-season.
4) Montreal can paper enough guys down to allow them to enter the "season" under the cap, then put Price on LTIR, and then call players back up.

Montreal's cap situation has been and is managed.

Pittsburgh wanted to trade Petry to create cap space and flexibility because they wanted to improve the roster and needed to take on salary to do so. Montreal participated in the Karlsson trade because they got futures and got to move Hoffman, who was blocking young forwards. Montreal is not in the same position as Pittsburgh, they DON'T need to move Petry for cap space. They'll try to move him for the same reason they traded him to Pittsburgh (because he wants to play for a more competitive team and he's earned respect in the org), but they aren't going to move him for the sake of it, they need to get something that benefits them. If they aren't going to get it, then Petry will stay because he's still a guy who can play in all 3 zones, bring experience, and bring a physical element.

My bag, I am looking at it wrong. I hope it works out.

Again, complete lack of common sense. Habs are Rebuilding (thats when a team gets younger in order to compete later) so Petry isnt going to be apart of the future core. Trading him and recouping picks is what should be done.

And as a Sabres fan, you shouldnt be talking about a team in last place. The Habs have won the western conference more recently then the Sabres have even played a playoff game

Me too, didn't mean to come across abrasive like that but I've almost come to wits end arguing with others on here. Cheers.

Landscape of the NHL will dictate his price, and there aren't many teams that can take him. Montreal needs the cap space and teams know it.

1. There are lots of teams that can take Petry at 2.3 mil and would have a need.

2. Montreal doesn't need the cap space we have 5 mil in LTIR available even with Petry on the roster

Enjoy your rebuild

Just send Petry elsewhere, bc we don’t want him
And we certainly aren’t gonna overpay

Seems very clearly you are in the minority of whether or not the Sabres want Petry, thread was literally created by a Sabres fan and other Sabres fans like the idea of upgrading the RD with Petry, they are just hung up on the cost to acquire him given that he was used as cap offset to facilitate the Karlsson deal. Look back at the Patches deal to Vegas, Tatar was used in the same way but was never considered a cap dump.

Not at all, like the convo. I was looking at who you could float and Players you have that are waiver exempt. Looking at it the wrong way. I think Petry would be a nice fit in Buffalo. Just don't think Montreal will get what he's probably worth even with another retention.

Its absolutely hilarious to see how many people want Petry 40-50% retained, but aren’t willing to pay sh**. Simple business law: If the demand is high, the price goes up

SO WEIRD that Petry didn’t get traded to the Sabres
It’s almost like Sabres fans were telling Habs fans all along that it wasn’t gonna happen, hmmmmm…. 🤣🤣🤣

Nice return u guys got btw, lol
So much for getting that top prospect &/or a 1st

I try to be real here. I’ll stand my ground, but admit my Ls. I’m not trying to be biased, just have an opinion that some people don’t agree with just because its the Habs

Well i appreciate you being (somewhat 🤣🤣) reasonable
No offense to your fellow fans, but yikes!
It’s like they get an idea on their head & just won’t let it go,
then they ran it down your throat with post after post after post

Petry to Buffalo was a perfect example
Allen to Buffalo is another

It’s fine to have differing opinions
But when an ENTIRE FAN BASE is telling you something,
it’s probably worth listening to

Just saying…..
Food for future thought
