No extension obviously too much. With extension, depends. Value is probably in line but both teams would never consider it.

I don't think Sabres would trade Cozens straight up for Nylander and Liljegren. It is Nylander's next contract that is the problem.

Sabres won’t trade a guy like Cozens for “rental” Auston Matthews- too risky

An extension for Matthews completely flips this discussion one way or another.

If Matthews doesn't agree to an extension, then it wouldn't make sense for Buffalo, but if he does, Buffalo makes that trade 100/10 times.

Dont think it would make sense for Buffalo either way, Cozens (and somewhat Samuelsson's) contract is a massive discount for the next 7 years and Matthews is asking for 14+, literally double Cozens.
Matthews is a higher caliber player, but the cap difference doesnt justify it as Cozens is still an amazing C. Why pay a great defensive dman, your top (or close to top) prospect and a first just have have to pay 7 Million more for someone, regardless of the upgrade.

It makes the Sabres a serious playoff contender and solidifies the Leafs to contend for a Cup. It is a win win for both teams. The CAP will go up and compensate for Matthews new contract

The cap going up isn't a justification here, it creates more room but alternatively the Sabres could have the 7 Million in available cap plus the ~5 Million in increase to search for a goalie/depth/RHD. Plus they have quite a few ELC's ending soon that will need to be signed. All together it doesn't make much sense, removing Cozens/Sam from the trade and adding prospects would likely work better.

The Sabres are already almost playoff contenders and they could fit all 3 players combined under Matthews next contract

Buffalo isn’t bailing Toronto out of their bad salary cap decisions.
