Gotta disagree. Not denying Guhle being good, but how often do you get a goalie prospect projected to be an elite starter? The LHD is also the position we're logjammed on. Askarov steps in when Saros is gone.

I think both teams say no, Trotz was very aggressive in trying to land Reinbacher so he may target Guhle, but MTL would have to sweeten the deal a bit to land a potential franchise goaltender

I'm pretty sure Trotz was agro at the draft because he wanted one of Smith/Michkov. Multiple teams wanted Reinbacher but I don't think Nash was one of them. Trotz was trying to acquire game changing forwards.

NSH would want Byfield more than Guhle. If they were interested in trading Askarov, they'd just deal with LA directly.

Still dont understand where people get the idea Trotz wanted Reinbacher.

From trotz:
"I challenged our scouts," he said. "'Take your swings and draft people that are going to get people out of the seats.' Because I can find the third- and fourth-line guys all day long through our own team, the [American Hockey League], the NHL. I can find those guys, but I can't find the game-changers. The game-changers are found here by our scouts. We've done a really good job in a few areas, but the center ice area is one that is a hole for us"

Smith was the natural go for. Nashville has managed to get great dmen from the first 4 rounds in the draft over their history but have never managed a game changing center. Smith was their shot here.

Rick DiPietro was taken 1st overall.

Goalie projections are meaningless.

Yes, because DiPietro was drafted first overall, we should look to move our future starter.

On paper, this isn't crazy. Value is there and each team fills a need (a little bit too soon for Nashville, because Josi and McDonagh still have good years ahead).

In reality, no team would have the guts to trade away their respective blue chip prospect.

Thanks for your entertaining ideas.

I didn't say that. You should absolutely keep him.

My point is that you're just as likely to develop a 3rd or 4th round pick into a franchise goaltender as you are a 1st round pick.

See above. Draft position is significantly more important for forwards and defenseman than it is for goaltenders.

Okay... Doesn't really matter if goalie projections are meaningless, if we have a goalie drafted 11oa, we'll assume he's our next starter lol. Don't know what point you're making

That goaltender prospects are valued less than forward prospects because their draft position doesn't reasonably predict whether or not they will be a quality starting goaltender in the NHL.

On the other hand, the overwhelming majority of top quality NHLers at forward and defense were taken in the top two rounds.

I always figured goaltending prospects are just in low demands. Contending teams dont want prospects, they want current players. LA would go for Saros not Askarov. Rebuilding teams have time to they either have a goaltender they think will be the one (Buffalo - Levi) or they just grab all they can at the draft and pray (Montreal has drafted 5 in three drafts).

Teams only need 1 starter and most teams already have them or have 1 or 2 in their pipeline will work out. Teams need 12 forwards and 6 dmen. Goalies as important as they are to the teams success just arent gonna get drafted high usually unless the GM sees something special in them and thats gonna be eye of the beholder stuff there.
