why are people picking them to miss the playoffs

Description
I think many see Pittsburgh or Buffalo making the playoffs and pushing the Islanders out of the playoffs. I still think the Islanders make the playoffs. They made the playoffs with Barzal missing a significant part of the season and Pelech missing a good part of the season. They made the playoffs even though Horvat couldn't score. This is basically the same team as last year minus Josh Bailey and Zach Parise. They should make the playoffs. They have Ilya Sorokin who is one of the best (some could argue he is the best goalie) in the league. Sorokin could singlehandedly carry this team to the playoffs. The Islanders owned Pittsburgh last season, but they had diffculty beating Buffalo. I don't know why the Islanders allowed like 40 shots against Pittsburgh 3 times and won all 3 of those games. (They won the 4th game as well, but they were the ones with like 40 shots) I think Florida and Boston are more likely to fall out of the playoff race and the Islanders should stay as the 1 WC. I don't see Pittsburgh surpassing them although I do see the 2 WC (Pittsburgh imo) being higher than the 3rd in the Atlantic (Buffalo or Ottawa). They still feel like they are a 2nd round exit at best. If Barry Trotz was still HC I could see the Isles going on another run. They have to be able to score in the playoffs. If they play like the 2019 St. Louis Blues or the 2020 and 2021 versions of themselves then they can go far. However many of their forwards are 30 and older. The entire 4th line is old and not as effectively as it was in the 2020 and 2021 runs. Anders Lee didn't do anything in last seaosn's playoffs. He is 33. Brock Nelson will turn 32 in just over a month, but Nelson should be fine. Palmieri will be 33 by the time the playoffs roll around. He only played 55 games last season. However Pittsburgh is an even older team and most of the Rangers forwards are actually 30 and older (Laff, Kakko, and Chytil are the only forwards that are less than 30).

There's no doubt that they could make the playoffs but they could just ad easily miss the playoffs. It's probably because of the overall quality of their roster that people bet against them. That being said they are a really good team when they can score since they have players eho know how to commit to defensive play.

They have the best goalie in the world. With the best backup goalie in the league that’s why they will always be in the hunt.

They are a good team and built to be very good in the last 25% of the regular season and playoffs, they do lack a little overall speed which could hurt in the first part of the season, must avoid injuries but so do all teams.

Islanders are bad their defensemen, goalies and playing defensive overall gets them in the playoffs, will it work this season maybe by 1 or 2 points they squeak in as usual..they are not fun to watch they're not highly skilled upfront, barzal is probably the most overrated player in the league unfortunately.

That's the problem. They are the same team as last year. Pretty much every team in the East that wants into the playoffs improved with the exception of Boston and Boston despite loosing their top 2 centers are were a far better team than NYI last year so I would pick them to make it in if it's down to just 1 wild card spot.

The top 3 in the Metro are pretty much a lock baring major injuries and I would probably take at least 4 teams in the Atlantic over the Islanders too. So that leaves basically 1 WC slot for all of NYI, PIT, BUF, OTT, and anyone else who can join the fray.

The Rangers aging core is still better than the islanders and they just came off 110 and 107 point seasons with a coach who had no system in place

NYR are icing a better opening lineup this year than last year

Isles before the Horvat trade: 25-22-5 - an 87 point pace over a full season.
Isles after the Horvat trade: 17-9-4 - up to a 104 point pace over 82 games.

Do I think they're a 104 point team over a full season? Not without -everything- going right; you're obviously hoping Horvat & Barzal can mesh well together, and you're hoping that the Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri line continues driving play the way they did once they started skating together after the deadline, and you're hoping for good health up and down the lineup because there's not a ton of guys ready to step up if a Barzal or a Pelech misses significant time again this season.

But you're talking about returning the core of a team that had a legit shot of making it out of the first round against the Hurricanes and will always be a pain in the ass to play against in the playoffs. I personally don't buy the Penguins as leapfrogging them (the upgrade from Petry -> Karlsson is good but doesn't paper over the fact that Tristan Jarry is still the goaltender), and I think we're all going to be surprised to see one of the 100+ point teams from last season fall apart. Does this mean the Isles are a slam dunk for the playoffs? No, but I think they've got enough of a track record over the past few years to not write them off at this point.
