If Yzerman had traded Larkin Bertuzzi and Vrana at the 2022 TDL

Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 22, 2023
Published: Sep. 22, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Detroit went 7-10-3 after the 22 deadline. 4-7-3 with Larkin in the lineup, 6-8-3 with Bertuzzi and 7-10-3 with Vrana. They all scored exactly a point per game they played after the deadline in which Detroit earned at least 1 point, with Larkin scoring 2 goals in 7, Bertuzzi 4 goals in 9 and Vrana 8 goals in 10! They finished 14 points from a top 3 finish and 11 points from a top 5 finish. I think it's safe to say they would have finished a couple spots lower without those 3 in the lineup and Pius Suter as Detroit's #1C for 20 games.

It's hard to say what would have happened in 22-23 if Yzerman had decided to pull the plug at the previous deadline. He still had to ice a team that's not going to get absolutely crated 82 times, just for the sake of the young guys. Plus they would have had to spend something crazy like 40-45 million just to reach the cap floor without those 3. Of course, there's the other side of it where, who's going to want to sign long term with a team that is so obviously tanking hard for Bedard. Maybe Stevie gets in on a couple cap dumps? In real life they signed Husso, Czarnik, Kubalik, Maatta, Copp, Perron, Chiarot, Luff, Pysyk, Hagg, Doucet, Lethemon, Sprong, Reimer, Holl, Gettinger, Kostin, Lyon, Rafferty, Compher, Gostisbehere, Fischer, and Stevens. In my fantasy world I'm going to pretend they don't sign Chiarot, Perron or Reimer but add Monahan, Mrazek and McDonagh as cap dumps.

Detroit finished 21 points from a top 3 finish and 12 points from a top 5 finish in 23. They went 28-24-8 before Bertuzzi got traded, 17-9-3 with him in the lineup. Vrana obviously was not a factor in Detroit's season, but Larkin had a fantastic year. I'm going to pretend they got a top 5 pick in 22 and a top 3 pick in 23. I'm not going to speculate who they trade Larkin, Bertuzzi and Vrana to, but I'm going to assume they got at least 3 mid to late 1sts and 3 2nds for the 3 of them. All in 22 and 23.

Are we sure Yzerman doesn't draft Carlsson over Bedard because he's more of a "200ft" center

Oh my favourite, if we did that, and that will happen, then we should have done that, to use our knowledge of future and do that.

it's pretty easy to predict that if we trade our top 3 offensive players, captain and main play driver that we would be in the running for multiple 1sts overall. it doesn't take a crystal ball to figure that one out

This is a very long winded way of saying you wish the redwings were the Blackhawks. You guys had your however many years of making the playoffs. Now you get to suffer with whatever Yzerman is to make up there

This site is great for visualizing what-ifs. Not the most realistic 1 I’ve seen but if you’ve got the time, I say enjoy playing around.
