My guess is that BG’s entire plan is dependent on if Rossi is able to translate his game to the NHL. Since Zucc is up after 2 years, and Foligno could be moved after 2 years, if the Wild eat half of Foligno’s deal, that opens up about 20mil in cap space (including the buyout penalty reduction, 22mil without retention) for the 2026 season. That isn’t even counting however much the cap ceiling rises in that timespan.
On paper, it is both a smart and quite stupid move. On the one hand, he is keeping the team together, and hoping for players to take that next step forward. On the other hand, he is hurting their chances of being competitive as well as making it near impossible to sign any top talents from the market to potentially improve the team. But being exceptionally reliant on Rossi developing into a top line C, not a wise move. And frankly, I’m of the opinion that Rossi won’t develop into what the Wild so desperately need him to be.
It’s either this, or the Wild are taking a very long look at the 2025-26 UFA class, and licking their chops over Draisaitl headlining that UFA class. I mean, not going to lie here, I kind of want to see how much damage a line composed of Kaprizov-Draisaitl-Boldy could do.
