Okay so what are the sens doing with Lassi Thompson

Created by: Howie
Team: 2023-24 Ottawa Senators

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't understand why they move a previous 1st round pick who is a rhd with size and success in the ahl on waivers. You spend all that time developing him just for a team like Arizona or Anaheim to claim him and see the reward. It makes no sense and really may be a regretful action.

Side note who is going to claim him? My guess the ducks

If a Dman can't make the top 7 for a non playoff team, maybe he isn't NHL material. Doesn't matter where he was drafted, it's what he is NOW.
Maybe the Ducks claim him as you suggest. Can he be a RHD top 6 or the 7th Dman?

Because he isn't very good and needs more time to develop?

He's not good enough to be top 6 D at the moment. He may never be. If he's on the Sens, is he playing 1 out of every 3 games? How is he supposed to develop as opposed to more time in the AHL playing more quality minutes?

Sens have given him many chances to prove himself over the last two seasons. He regressed last season. Hasn't looked very good this preseason. So yeah, go on waivers, if he clears, go to AHL and get better

I'm sure GMPD ran his name to other GMs, I guess none saw it worth to give up at a 7th Rd pick to make sure they got him.

I mean this happens every year... Players burn through their entry level deal and they aren't ready. 1st round pick or 6th round, doesn't matter now, he needs more development. Pretty safe time for waivers though, everyone does it. If a player isn't going to stick on their 23 player roster, teams won't claim a guy just because. Spencer Martin's of the world are rare. Goalies have better chances of being claimed in this waiver period imo

A player like jusso valamaki comes to mind got claimed last year when flames didn't think he was ready and look at him now. Thompson can definitely be a #6 or #7 on a team and at his age he'll get claimed

He hasn’t shown significant progression at the NHL level. If you watched the JetsVSens game last night I would like to point out the first goal for Winnipeg where Thomson is completely lost standing in the crease watching the play.
I don’t think the sens would be too concerned about him being taken as they have an other prospects who have surpassed him. JBD, Hamara, Kleven, Donovan.

If Thomson hits waivers, Hawks probably put in a claim. He'd get 3rd pair minutes over Zaitsev for sure. I'd think multiple teams put in a claim on him.

The answer is pretty simple here : Pierre Dorion is just an awful GM. No foresight and zero asset management

Copy/paste something I said earlier :

Not only that, Lassi Thomson is going to get picked up on waivers because Hamonic is blocking him for a path to the NHL

Not enough? Now imagine if the Canucks are the ones claiming Thomson, that'd mean 3rd + Thomson (the last piece we had from the Duchene return) for Hamonic who'd end up a negative asset.

It just never stops with Dorion's mismanagement, it's like a perpetual nightmare

I could EASILY see Hamonic becoming a non-desired player as soon as this season... and Thomson establishing him as a 3rd pairing RHD and a good option on the PP.

He's much better than Hamonic (but not as "tough")

I think this goal against sums up Hamonic well :

Thomson should have been our 7th D-man, well competing with JBD for games

Sanderson - Chychrun
Chabot - Zub
Brannstrom - JBD/Thomson

And Kleven in the AHL getting ready for the NHL.

Sure Thomson was the main culprit on the Jets 1st goal last night but which Sens D-men usually don't do these gaffs? Brannstrom, Sanderson and Zub are the only ones who usually don't

Habs got Byron, Montembeault and Kovacevic on waivers. Sometimes it's just bad pro scouting and bad projecting from their previous teams

It's not because you just won 100$ that you have to throw the 100$ you already had in the garbage bin.

Also really doubt Hamara ill be a NHL player, at least not as of now

I'd say he gets claimed 99% chances. Can't see him passing the Hawks/Sharks.
