Preseason Shuffle

Description
This is the best defense right now. Peeke and Boqvist need to go because Jiricek and Blankenburg deserve to play. Mateychuk is really close, but I think he just needs one more year of development before making the team. Getting those contracts out of the way will allow him to step in next year without issue.

I'm convinced after watching Roslovic this preseason that he's never going to change. He's a highly skilled player but has no compete. I'm not sure who would want him, but it looks like he could be a good fit for OTT who could use some more skill in their bottom-6. Robinson is likely gone after this season so Joseph can replace him.

SJS is thin on the right side of the defense after trading away Burns and Karlsson in consecutive years. Boqvist gives them a very skilled young RHD who can run their PP and grow with a rebuilding team.

Peeke is from FLA and spends his offseason there, Zito was here when he was drafted, and they need dmen who can stay healthy. Peeke is a perfect fit because he can play up and down the lineup. He's durable, a great role player, can handle big minutes, and will slot in well on the 3rd pair when Montour and Ekblad come back.

For OTT, it frees up almost $1m in cap this year which allows them to put one more guy on the roster, and frees up almost $3 in each of the next two seasons. It's worth it from their perspective.

For CBJ, they get a pick, a future replacement for Robinson, and clear Roslovic out so other guys who are working harder can get those top-9 minutes, like Bemstrom, Texier, Danforth, and they also have Chinakhov and Voronkov who will be pushing for minutes.

Maybe the pick would be higher, idk.

Better off just playing roslovic 4th line or calling one of those guys up now and placing him on waivers imo. Roslovic full salary gets claimed and Joseph has negative value.

Moving Roslovic is addition by subtraction. He doesn't work, his focus drifts, and he misses defensive coverages regularly. Joseph is overpaid for a 4th liner, but at least he has a good work ethic and more skill than Olivier, which I think would improve this 4th line.

I think Ros would screw up the 4th line. No one would claim his salary, and CBJ ownership aren't going to pay him $4m to play in Cleveland.

Joseph's deal has three years left, though. One major plus to Roslovic is that he doesn't. If we're doing that, the pick has to be much higher than a fourth for the opportunity cost of either having to move Joseph in the future or being stuck with a 3 million dollar fourth liner as they're entering their actual competitive window in 2024-25.

Joseph has a very high compete level and is pretty good defensively (and elite on PK), Sens really don't need a Roslovic type. Not doing this deal at all

Bad fit for Ottawa, this doesn't even save a million (and can easily afford Joseph after this season)

When everyone is healthy :

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Tarasenko
Kubalik - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Giroux
Joseph - Kastelic - MacEwen

No since they wouldn't be cap compliant if Pinto signs over 1.5 and if Norris is not on LTIR, Jarventie (who looks dynamite with Batherson) could replace Kubalik, or have Giroux in the Top-6 :

Tkachuk - Stutzle - Tarasenko
Batherson - Norris - Giroux
Greig - Pinto - Joseph
Smejkal - Kastelic - MacEwen

Either way, if Norris is on LTIR, Pinto will be signed without the need of trading anyone. If he is not, then there's still a lot of options. Joseph is more need for ES defense and PK. No PP ice time available for Roslovic as well.

Not a 4th liner at all though. 4th liners don't average 30 pts per 82 games, particularly when it's not even the best part of their games.

Dorion does a lot of blunders so nothing surprises me from him but personally, I have ZERO insterest in this

Boqvist fits a need yes, but a conditional 1st and a 4th is definitely too much. Even our own 2nd in 2024 is going to be so high that that its basically a low 1st so that also seems a bit rich for Boqvist.
