How could that possibly make the slightest sense for Ottawa?

How does that help Toronto? They'll have no cap space and 1 freaking goalie signed... They are also not able to afford the guy they traded for

At least Toronto gets a long-term 3C with 2C potential. Ottawa gets nothing out of this.

Sammy has the potential to turn things around and be a great number 1 for Ottawa, even if you look at his last 2 games, he was pretty good

Toronto doesn't have the room to do anything in their current cup window

Ottawa already has Korpisalo and Forsberg.

So...what? Ottawa just puts Forsberg in the minors with his $2.75 million cap hit? Not to mention they'd be over the cap with Samsonov.

Absolutely not. Getting out of the final two yrs of Garland while saving 800k and getting an upgrade on Myers (no matter how marginal that upgrade is) is totally worth it.

The Canucks would still have Myers after this trade.
Leafs would have to retain at least 25% for this to be considered.

Klingberg is worse defensively than Myers. We need a defensively responsible dman to go in Myers spot, Klingberg doesn’t fit that. He’s probably the single worst dman in his own zone in the whole league

And yet we'd still save cap this yr and get out completely from the next two yrs of Garland. Which would allow us to sign a top 4 UFA dman next summer.

The reality is any trade of Garland without retention, sweetener or term coming back is undoubtedly a good move for the Canucks going forward.

With or without Garland we can realistically have cap space to sign a top 4 D in free agency this offseason

And we'd have 5 mil extra to play with with Garland off the books.

And with that 5 mil we’d be hoping to get someone as good as Garland

Forsberg at his best is a good starter, Korpisalo at his best is lights-out good. Your point is irrelevant because all three goalies are playing far from their best.

No we'd be hoping to get a top 4 dman. Like a legit one. Thats the whole point of moving Garland. Especially considering our best prospects Hoglander, Podz, Lekkerimaki, Klimovich are all wingers.

Forsberg, at his best during his short career, is an okay backup and Korpisalo, at his best, is the 1B of a tandem... He hasn't produced good numbers when playing more than 30 games in a season

Whereas Sammy has already put up great numbers when playing 40+ games

Forsberg has better career stats on far worse teams than Samsonov who was good last season but Forsberg did the same in 2021-22 on a team much much worse defensively

Ottawa has ZERO reason to add 800 000$ just like that even if it was Samsonov for Forsberg

PLUS, it would actually be really bad to move on from Forsberg and piss off Korpisalo who just signed 5 years in Ottawa to play with Anton... And the GM just got fired, so good luck attracting UFAs after that

Ottawa already has Korpisalo and Forsberg.

Not to mention Sogaard who seems to be getting closer and closer to be NHL ready. Leevi Merilainen is also an excellent prospect

That people like it or not, Korpisalo-Forbserg is the Sens duo this season

Samsonov has never been as good as Forsberg was in 2021-22 so not sure why he is a "backup" while Samsonov would be great

Not to mention Korpisalo has more ability... Samsonov would get shelled on the Sens right now, they only play well in the Offensive Zone, which is the summary of DJ Smith's career

As usual, you only rely on your opinion.

Korpisalo not playing more than 30 games with a save percentage over .900 with 1 team... Him struggling in the playoffs... Him having an objectively worse season that Sammy last year despite that being his best year

You're not considering the teams these players were playing. I am a goalie and I can certify that the team in front of you has a bigger impact on your stats than your own performance. Korpisalo did very well in Columbus and had better stats in LA cuz team defense is much better, like it was for Samsonov in TO
