That's more than any trade asset has gone for in a LONGGG time, let alone a goalie

The devils don't. That's SIGNIFICANTLY more than what vegas paid for eichel or any other massive trade in recent memory

While true, it’s a lot harder to fit a $10m player in with a flat cap than a $5m player with a cap increase next season (and retention would be on the table).

I don’t think Holtz, Vanecek, 1st is too much for NJD to part with, but Mercer can’t go with Hughes and Hischier out right now— and I doubt they would want to move him anyway. The Mercer/Tomasino inclusion just muddies things too much here (although I’m not opposed to moving Tomasino in another deal).

I think NSH would be more interested in getting Nemec from NJD as opposed to a winger ultimately, but I doubt NJD is keen on moving him.

Wouldn't give up nemec for Saros even in a 1 for 1 deal

I think you're underestimating the value of Tomasino as well as Saros @ $5m for 2 seasons

Holtz+Vanacek+1st would still be a massive package, the biggest package for a goalie in a LONG time

Saros even if he's a 10 million dollar player (which isn't a guarantee with how voodoo goalies are) is still only 10 mill in surplus value. You'd be stretching me to give up 2 ELC years of holtz and then 3 RFA years+a 1st for that, let alone Vanacek and Mercer

No thanks. IF the Devils were not willing to give up Mercer/Holtz for Meier, why do you think their gonna give up those 2 for a goalie. Nice OVERPAY. Can we for once stop copy and pasting the same goalie trade every single day. Defence is the problem rn not goalie but yall ignore that cuz yall just over panic for nothing.

Vanacek and 1st would be main pieces of the return…maybe another prospect. But Mercer, Holtz, Nemec…don’t even bother with those guys.

When they first brought him over for his first brief stint in AHL, MacKinnon said they have to develop him…won’t jump right in. In the off-season, they got him linked up with Bratt’s skating and skill coaches in Sweden. When he was in and out of lineup last year, they kept him on roster so Brunette could work one-on-one with him (instead of putting him on showcase in AHL). When Sharks asked about Holtz in Meier trade, Fitzy was said to have responded, “if Holtz, only Holtz.” It shows what NJD management thinks of him….Holtz is not, and has never been, a trade chip.

The goalies are voodoo argument doesn't really hold up here. Since taking over the starter's job, Saros has finished no lower than 6th in Vezina voting. He's picked up Hart votes in two of his last three seasons. He's consistently been one of the very top goalies in the NHL. He's not a Samsonov or Andersen type.

If Vanacek is being looked at as a main piece, and not a spare part so NJ can move some salary out, I don't think there's a deal to be had here.\

And yet his numbers don't look that pretty this year. Negative GSAx per money puck so far

He has played in every game…and in last two games, he has gotten a lot more ice time.

He had a tough game against Edmonton a few weeks ago where he got pulled that is probably still throwing off his numbers. He'll get back to the mean after a few more solid starts. Its only November

He's historically gotten off to a slower start, and then progressively better throughout the year. I'll take it over a goalie who fades down the stretch anyday.

I doubt GMs view Vanacek as a cap dump, but if Trotz thought that about him, then it just reaffirms the idea that goalies are, in fact, voodoo.

If Nashville asked for Vanecek, 1st and a prospect like Foote, Vilèn, etc…I think that would be a solid return for a goalie. But any proposal that includes Nemec, Luke, Holtz, Mercer, etc is unrealistic. Goalies never return that type of value.

This would be an all in move by the Devils and if they did it and won the Cup nobody would bat an eye. But if they did this and didn't win then fans would riot

We're not paying this for a goalie who's going to be average. He better be at least half a goal saved above expectation per game to even entertain it

I didn't say cap dump - I said spare part. If you think a top goalie like Saros doesn't have much trade value, one who's a significant step down from him like Vanecek isn't going to be worth a fraction as much.

Saros is NSH's most valuable player. He's in the prime of his career, and he's getting paid half his worth for this season and next. A presumably late 1st, a warm body to temporarily replace him, and maybe a B prospect isn't going to get them to return NJ's call.
