I don't see how Arizona could say no, unless they think they want to re-sign Dumba

I would make that trade. Dumba is a fine player but the 1st and a serviceable RHD would be a good trade.

Elliotte Friedman says otherwise:

They’d have to, I’d think. Unless they have plans for Dumba extension in January.

With all due respect, not a lot of defensemen are worse than Klinky this season

No. AZ is trying to be competitive. They’ve built a pretty good team, fast, relatively young, offensive group. They aren’t taking dumps anymore. They’re actively trying to get better.

Maybe just maybe at the TDL if they’re too far from a playoff spot they’ll give serious consideration but they’re gonna try to stick around as long as possible.

They could flip the pick for equally good, maybe even better, dman. The delta between Klingberg and Dumba is not that much, especially when considering health risks.

I had been hoping for Ryan Graves or Soucy...Klingberg and Dumba weren't even on my radar as a Leafs fan. Confused

That's what I think, too. I like Dumba more than Klingberg, obviously, but the first would be impossible to pass up.

You could see if you can hide Klingberg in the lineup for the rest of the year, and you get a first to pocket or play with as you see fit. For a guy that signed a one year deal with them as a last resort. Outside chance you can still move Klingberg at the deadline.

The flexibility to use the first to add prospects or move up at the draft or to chase a better dman to help you right now is worth more than Dumba (and more than what Dumba would return even with retention). The cap difference is meaningless (to AZ), and they save a small amount of money. Even if Klingberg is cooked, it's a one-year deal you swallow for a first rounder to play with.
