Initial Creation Date: Nov. 12, 2023
Published: Nov. 12, 2023

Description
The challenge, in this scenario, would be summer of 2025 when we would have to sign Holtz and Luke Hughes off their ELC deals…so we’d probably have to move someone out then.

Why would FLA even consider that?

Hanifin's agent in the Flames essentially agreed to an extension that was around 50m.

Think that's what he would be looking for with NJ as well.

    1. They are paying Knight $4.5m to play in AHL.
    2. They have no prospect pool.
    3. Most of their blueline are pending UFAs
    4. Casey is leading NCAA in scoring as 19-yr old dman.

    …lots of reasons

My guess is that he gets Weegar’s contract…or roughly similar amount…on open market.

    In this scenario,

    1. Devils acquire Hanifin
    2. [Fitzmagic!]
    3. Hanifin signs discount

Better prospect, lower pick. Not both.

Sell Bahl to recoup assets, Vilen as 7d at some point. I'd keep casey if I'm getting hanafin and then trade marino before 25-26 season to recoup the assets of that trade

Hes there to play more than 15 games a year and to get his confidence back after missing half the year and pretty sure they dont care about prospects right now. Not giving away their players for soemthing they have no use for yet. Send them a top 4 dman and they’ll talk. Not a back up goalie and a prospect who won’t touch their lineup for 3 years at minimum

You want a 1st pair caliber defenseman but don't want to trade for his value? You are offering a very late 1st and a C prospect. Hanifin is probably worth at least the same as Orlov

Also he's not signing for less than 6M

    Orlov got a 1st and a 2nd
    Hathaway got a 3rd
And the caps took on a cap dump in craig smith.

    This is the orlov price

    Orlov got less.

    Orlov at 50% = 1st
    Hathaway = 2nd
    25% on Orlov = 5th
    Smith+3rd = 0

Not what the devils need. They need Zadorov, Tanev or Carrier. im not high on Hanifin, yall just want him cuz he is friends with Fitzy. Fla isnt trading Knight.

I want Hanifin because I think he fits our system. Zadorov would not (just another Smith). We need a dman who can exit d-zone with possession to get our 5v5 game rolling again.

If Knight spends year in AHL, and it sounds like he could…I don’t see why a trade would be unfathomable.

    Orlov at 50% = 1st
    Hathaway = 2nd
    25% on Orlov = 5th
    Smith+3rd = 0

So Hanifin's price should be a minimum a 1st + 2nd. He makes less than 5M and can be double retained down to 1.25M, plenty of teams should have interest at that cap hit so why should the Flames settle for a late 1st and C prospect?

Orlov's cap hit was also 1.25. He got a 1st that was at best 28th, and you can haggle over Hathaway's value+the cost to dump smith to add between nothing and a 2nd to hanafin's value

Is Hanafin a higher value asset than Orlov? maybe. maybe not

It all depends on the market at the end of the day but woth the say it seems to be going I think Calgary has tha majority of the defense market on their roster and I think the demand will be be pretty high

We'll see what happens for sure. How many heavy buyers really are there tho for a LHD

    I don't see many:

NJD will be interested, no way you trade with Edmonton, is Pitt gonna go further all in? I don't think a LHD is TML target. Stars maybe?? Minnesota just made a move, do they make another? Does buffalo want a LHD with Samuellson, Power and Dahlin all lefties.

Who else we looking at? I see tanev getting a haul, Zadorov will be overpaid for. not sure the Hanafin market is all there tho

I see Florida interested, Arizona is reportedly interested, Seattle, Vancouver, Winnipeg probably too. Injuries also happen too. Hanifin is a top 4 defenseman on nearly every team in the league and would be a great addition to any contender

I didn’t price in retention. I would say 1st + 3rd without retention, so I don’t think we are that far off. And I’m sure a player would be in exchange too, but I don’t think it would be a top-50 prospect. A package of a 51-100 prospect with a 1st and a later pick…would be good return for Calgary imo.

Good part is that if we need a guy like Hanifin, we have the assets to acquire. If they trade for him with intention of signing him, I’d be curious if they offer Bahl (with a 2nd maybe).

I don't think AZ ends up buying. Vancouver maybe but that's in the division and I don't think they end up buying once the PDO wears off, Is winnipeg buying a lefty with Samberg Stanley Schmidt Morrissey Dillon all lefties? Maybe florida but idk if they buy with the quality play of their D+Ekblad and MOntour back ahead of schedule.

I wouldn't trade Bahl this year. The whole point of buying a D is getting Smith out of the lineup. But I'd be trading Bahl this offseason if we bring in hanafin

Meant to comment on this earlier . Zadorov is a good skater is is very good at skating the puck up ice. He's a massive upgrade on Smith

Not looking for puck rusher…need someone who can deliver to puck to the puck carriers (Bratt, Hughes, Hischier).

But that is not the impression I have ever gotten from Zadorov

    Sieg - Hamilton
    Hughes - Marino
    Hanifin - Miller/Nemec

    That is a playoff blueline.
