What goalie, let alone a rental, has ever cost THAT much in recent times? Insane

What goalie the caliber of Ullmark has been traded in recent times? I realize the narrative around goalies being “cheaper”, but the reality is great goaltenders don’t get traded unless there is a younger, great player ready to take his spot. GM’s like their jobs too much to lose a position that frankly is that important to consistent winning when you have a great player

Goalies like Vanacek get traded all the time. The last goalie with the resume of Ullmark who got traded in a non cap dump was for around this amount.

I personally wouldn’t trade him to Jersey . The biggest weakness that is holding them back is goaltending and defensive structure. Why enable them to fix it for a low price.

Perfectly content letting Ullmark and Swayman rotate and then having Ullmark secure his bag elsewhere in two offseasons unless the compensation to get him is impressive. Then again, I.believe the goaltender combo is the biggest reason Boston has been as good as they have been and Montgomery has learned his lesson for the playoffs.

The last significant goalie traded was Kuemper, a rental, 1st/Timmins/Cond 3rd. Short term memory.

Ullmark is significantly better.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Besides the fact that you are a Montreal fan, why would Boston weaken the position that is most fundamental to their strong play last year, this year and most likely through next season?

Not sure about the Bruins plans with DeBrusk but they are certainly not spending that money for those two UFA defensemen.

Solid effort.

Don’t think Elias makes it to UFA.

Doubt any interest in Martinez. With Hampus and Lohrei occupying the top 4 LD for years they will likely go a cheaper route for 3rd pair d men.

Debrusk re-signs before they do that.

This is an offseason move.

They won’t keep that pair together forever. The offseason will be the perfect time to try. His NTC will be problematic, but the odds of an extension are slim and they need to get something for him rather than let him play out his final year and walk. Unless he’s willing to take a pay cut and backup role.

Ullmark has trade protection and I don't think the bruins will. be planning to run a 12 mill goalie tandem

At that point, the NMC becomes less problematic if said team is willing to extend him and he feels it’s a good option. Two variables that need to be present, but it probably extends whom he is willing to go to.

That said, I’m fine letting him go to free agency and walk for nothing if it means we will be in a better position to win. The only way I’d trade him is

1. a good number 1 is offered
2. A player equivalent to a good nunber 1 is offered
3. a very good top 6 forward is part of the equation.
4. We need the cap space to sign a great player and we need his cap space to do it (Nylander)

If the package begins with anything not among those items, I’m pretty much out. I do think this one would fit the description of a deal I’d consider under the right circumstances

I mentioned his trade protection being problematic in follow up post.

Boston has 25m in cap space this offseason and nobody to spend it on. Sway and Debrusk. 🤷🏻‍♂️. Rest of the roster is set.

They can role with both for another year and it won’t be an issue. They’d be better off on ice.

However letting him play out his contract and walk getting nothing for him would be poor asset management.

NTC won’t be any less problematic. It’s one less team. Pretty easy for him to sit and make a list that prevents a trade without his consent.

That being said. Agree. You don’t trade him just to trade him. Get what you want or hold him.

So Devils have to pay schmid, but they get a 5m goalie and keep vitek???? Making it super harder to resign mercer and possibly Toff good ideas. Devils arent paying that for a goalie who will be 31 next year. Like your just making the devs cap space into more hell. You will have to take vitek back.

They certainly are in the cap position to do it this year and next if they’d like. The only open question to me with regards to this is do they want to carry 3 goalies because Bussi probably won’t pass waivers.

Your choice. Hope that Schmid becomes something because Vitek is the epitome of average (if that) . You’d have to trade him, but you should be able to recover a third because there is a lot of crappy goaltending in the league

Understand the logic, but I don’t think it’s very founded.

What are you paying Vanecek? That extra 1.25m is the difference between an elite goalie (Ullmark) and a league average one (Vanecek). If it makes you feel better, put him in the deal and Boston can bury him if he can’t beat out Bussi.

You can go ahead and do that, but just don't see teams lining up to get on those 5 mill goalie contracts that could turn into a pumpkin at any time:

Isn’t that every player at this point? $5m for Ullmark is a bleeping bargain. Go ahead and pay $3.75m for Vitek and pretend that GM’s wont be going I wish I had more consistency in goal.

Your current strategy has led to the biggest weakness on a very good team

All I’m suggesting is if a team is willing to extend him, that will likely have value to him and may make a situation where he adjusts his NMC. It’s one parameter that doesn’t exist today.

Goalies are the least predictable position in the NHL. Even look at your 2 vezina caliber goalies. Both them turned into pumpkins in the playoffs last year and your historic team went out in round 1

Ullmark got injured and Swayman played one game, but OK. When healthy, Ullmark has been very consistent. The historic team got popped in the mouth and didn’t step up after starting the series fine.

Your series against Carolina kind of showed how your defensive structure and goaltending was a weakness … and you got weaker. Not sure how that works
