The salary retention doesn’t make sense in any Campbell deal. It’s much cheaper to buy him out in the off-season rather than commit to salary retention. If the Oilers move their 1st round pick to relieve Campbell’s contract, they’re won’t be much of any at all retention

This is indeed the point. I really don't think an Elvis/Campbell trade makes sense for the Blue Jackets, so it is more likely that the Oilers just buy out Campbell this off season.

If Edmonton is dropping 2 first round picks to unload campbell it's for his full contract. Retaining 2.5m on Campbell makes ZERO sense for them.

Up to a point. The Jackets don't have a viable replacement for Elvis and want to compete next year. They are not in the business of taking on cap dumps and buying out players from other teams. So unless they think Campbell can still be somewhat effective as a backup goalie I just don't see this happening. And if they thought he could be a backup, then they would still want to keep Elvis and would need retention on Campbell and compensation for taking him on as a more expensive backup.
