Solving Edmontons goalie woes

Created by: DopeGM
Team: 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 6, 2023
Published: Dec. 6, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Probably not enough (a first and Broberg) for taking on Campbell’s contract. But, Kostin is a negative asset and Maata (or maybe Chiarot) are expensive for what they bring so it’s possible Stevey Y does this enormous favour for Ken.

I can assure you Detroit won't be making that trade.

I know. Fun daydreaming I guess. I’d love to see Yz flip Broberg because he’s not needed on the left side.

Kostin is not a negative asset. Maatta is good for his price. Chiarot is garbage. That trade is awful for us.

Kostin is most definitely a negative asset with another year at $2.0M and locker room stuff coming up. I agree Chiarot is the better choice to send to EDM.

Only awful if you don’t like Broberg or the assets you get back in a Broberg flip. Campbell isn’t hurting the Wings hardly at all in the minors.

What locker room stuff do you speak of cause I haven't heard anything about it?

I read that the healthy scratch / disciplinary matter was bigger than the Lalonde statement let on. But it was speculation

Chiarot is garbage? Have you been watching the wings this season Lance? Fairs if you said that last year, but saw a stat today he is 57th percentile in expected goals above replacement this season (was horrid last). I’m not big on analytics, but he’s passed the eye test with flying colours as well.

I actually haven't been able to watch much, so basically going off of last year. I did get to watch some of tonight's game though. Work has kept me from being able to watch as much Red Wings games as I would like.
That's actually wicked then if he is playing better. It was probably more of a team thing than just a him thing last year as well.
I'll take back my statement if what you are saying is true.

One caveat was he is facing much weaker competition this year than last. Which makes a lot of sense. We still likely don’t want him paired with Seider facing the best that the opposition has, but in better situations he is holding his own at least for the most part!

Ah yes, workload and proper usage are very important. That's why Toronto fans hated Holl, he was playing top pair minutes going against some of the other teams best competition. Since I haven't been able to watch much, how is he doing this year for us?

For a team that's trying to win the Cup, doesn't make sense for them to waste cap like that. Even if Campbell bounces back, between him and Husso alone they would be spending almost 10M on goaltending. Broberg wouldn't definitely crack their lineup on the left side (they probably don't want to make a hole there either by trading either Maata or Chiarot) and for a team that has Edvinsson in the system, Broberg is probably not that enticing of an asset for the inconvenience of having so much tied up in goaltending.

If Detroit was willing to do something like this, Broberg+Campbell for Husso + a C-prospect makes more sense for the Red Wings without having to carve up their team. With both goalies getting a change of scenery, perhaps both teams find a solution in net. For the Oilers, if Husso does not work, dumping him next year might cost a 2nd or 3rd, making the effective cost of dumping Campbell Broberg+a 2nd or 3rd which is probably cheaper than what most teams are offering them. They can also just choose to buy him out which would be similar to buying out of Campbell except they rid themselves of any dead cap much sooner.

Other pieces like Kostin or Maata could be added after but it would have to be in a hockey trade. I don't think the Oilers would want to move Foegele or McLeod for Kostin. Maata would take someone like Ceci or Kulak being moved so I don't see the fit there but what do I know? McDavid wanted Holland to keep Foegele around, so I doubt that Holland would say okay we made the wrong decision and trade him, but with his contract ending next year and Kostin having a year left it might make some sense. Oilers would also free up 1M in the entirety of the deal to help make additional trades this year.

Chiarot has been good this season.

Of course he would hurt the Wings. He has 3 years on his contract after this one. We got contracts to renew, and the cap is better spent on players not in the AHL.

Holl has been okay to decent from what I’ve seen this season. Tbh I think the majority of games I watch though he is the scratch, or at least it feels like he is the most common blue liner scratched. Nonetheless, ok I think, comparable in that way to Maata, not usually a lot of good or bad things to say.

That's what I kind of figured. Thanks.

Sorry I read it on The Hockey Writers and went back two weeks and couldn’t find the article. But it was purely writer speculation.
