Just to add, Leafs didn't want Schenn and his three year contract otherwise he would be a Leaf.
After seeing Woll getting hurt, maybe goaltending is bigger issue this year.
Maybe the Leafs shouldn't be trading and giving away futures this season. Just make the playoffs, having everyone healthy in April, and make a run like the Panthers did last season.
The thing with Schenn is his contract is a year too long and around $1.5 MIL too rich. As a player though, he has adapted so well to his skill set that it is remarkable. As you all know, in the 2018-19 season when he was demoted by 2 different teams to the AHL and looked like his career was over he purposely re-defined himself based on what he could provide as a player rather than everyone's expectations that had been placed on him...like Scott Stevens 2.0, etc...
I figured Schenn was going to get signed to a pay raise to around $1.25 MIL x 2 years and maybe he would milk it to $1.5 MIL. $2.75 MIL was absurd in my mind and the 3 year deal connected to it was insane...but then I look at Lyubushkin getting $2.75 who doesn't have the skillset of Schenn, Gudas getting a 3 year deal at $4.0 MIL(!!) as a smaller RHD that can only fight non-fighters, glass-jaw Cernak getting $5.2 MIL, Chiarot getting $4.75, Gudbranson getting $4.0 MIL, and even Holl getting $3.4 with a M-NTC is crazy.
I would get Schenn back for a 3rd pick but see if a team (either Nashville or a 3rd team) would retain $1 MIL for an Leaf asset because after the playoffs started and the intensity picked up Schenn didn't get knocked around like most of the other Leafs defence men like Brodie, Gio and even McCabe.
Against Tampa Bay when Rielly checked a TBay forward that slipped into the boards and acted like he had a career ending injury all the ruffians (including Pat Maroon, Jeannot and Perry) were yelling at the Leafs bench. Schenn was intimidated by no one on the TBay bench and just skated over and leaned against the boards between the 2 benches. That's worth something when we are warring in the trenches.
