Team: 2023-24 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 10, 2023
Published: Dec. 10, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming Necas wants too much money, so Carolina sends him to Calgary, where they have a history of overpaying for players.

It's hard for me to argue Marky has much value.

I can't help myself from including Hanifin and Lindholm in a Canes trade.

Assume extensions or whatever helps you hate this less.

The craziest part is believing the Canes will spend a 1st.

Terrible for the Flames. We would get better returns for selling these players individually. Necas and the picks are all that is of value. Orlov is over paid and Calgary has enough of those contracts.

This is quite the trade... I don't see Tanev starting over Chatfield... Chatfield is the perfect defensemen for an RBA system and has proven to be a way above average defensemen

Orlov is for another year+... it isn't that bad and Raanta is up after this year

What if you were letting Pesce go retaining tanev for cheaper?

Trade Orlov next year. Defense is going to look real bad if Hanifin and Tanev leave.

Everybody seems to thing you can just pick top 4 defensemen off of the Defense tree.

I don't want to expose Wolf to two top four defensemen and a merry band of replacements.

I think you’ll see Hanifin and Lindholm traded, but I’m expect you’ll keep and try to resign Tanev when all is said and done

This does have too many moving parts. Markstrom for Orlov is interesting, but it does leave Carolina right heavy with defenseman and lacking a left side player.

I agree. However, next year's UFA market is decent. Calgary would have the cap to buy some serviceable replacements. I'd rather get as much prospects and draft capital as possible. This team is a waste away from contention.

Assuming Pesce is leaving, he would have to go somewhere else because of his NTC

Hanifin replaces Orlov on the left, assume hes extended.

Mangiapane is a cost controlled replacement for Necas for 2 years, not ideal but he could be 35 goal Mangiapane again, thats the gamble.

Also Markstrom, he's the big gamble.

Calgary has a tonne of cap space after unloading, Lindholm, Hanifin, Markstrom, Mangiapane.

More than enough for Nylander, even with Orlov on the books.

Or whatever you want to buy.

Well one of the reasons to let Pesce go is to bring up one of our prospects who is ready for the show

Assume they're going to Calgary in this deal, because Flames fans are saying this is big L for Calgary.

It isn't that bad of a deal as constructed if the flames are heading into a rebuild

I think the arguments that more futures and value could be extracted selling the UFAs separately are valid and worth considering.

Necas and Orlov could be sold for futures at the draft or in the off season if desireable.

If Calgary could remove all it's distractions for the year, get all the kids we want to see in the lineup, go into free agency with a better idea of what we are. I think thats a big win.

I think we all know that the defense is going to take a hit. I think we should all expect that with at least one of our 3 UFA's Calgary will try and add a NHL ready defenseman (ie Soderstrom, Lohrei, Timmins) or a depth defenseman to make the cap work (ie Hakanpaa, Forbort, Goligoski/Merrill). Hell even when other teams buy or sell they sometimes need to move players out to make the cap work or to simply open up a roster spot.

We also may be getting Kylington back sooner than later. I can also see Calgary looking to add a guy like Dante Fabbro who as fallen out of favour in Nashville

I don't think they get better without Hanifin and Tanev. Not anytime soon anyway.

I would like to see a massive retool of the forward group though.

Mangiapane and Dube are endlessly cycling through the lineup and Lindholm hasn't looked great since Tkchunk left.

Kadri line looks good, Backlund line looks good but they look like really good 2nd and 3rd lines. There is no top line and the 4th line is a victim of the constant shuffle.

Pelletier should be back soon, I want to see Klapka, cause he huuuge.

I do not want a defensemen that can barely crack the leafs lineup. That's my nightmare, hopefully Conroy knows better than to believe those stats. THEY'RE LIES, because the forward group is so good.

I like the Fabbro idea.

You are thinking way too much about it being the Leafs and not that Timmins is still relatively young and can play at the NHL level just fine. He is worth about a 3rd so if the choice in a Tanev trade is 1st + 3rd or 1st + Timmins I'll take the roster player. At worst he's a stop gap.

My biases are deserved and backed up by Kyp and Bourne.

I still think it is very plausible that Conroy sees value in Liljegren and Timmons, I'll even concede that they could potentially be useful.

But I feel like we've been warned.

They also have no healthy defenseman so I don't know if anyone would come back?

Liljegren is legitimate. He is not a 1st pair defenseman but he is absolutely growing into a solid 2nd pairing defenseman and it is not because of the team he plays on.

Timmins is cheap and big. He's not a bad skater and he can kill penalties. I think he ends up being a depth defenseman in the long run but I think he is NHL caliber.

I am talking about the deadline when I make these posts. Calgary isn't going to retain on anyone that is still owed over 1M even at 50% retention. By then players like Gio and Liljegren should be healthy again
