Using Korpisalo Gavrikov comp for goalie dman trade

Created by: NHLfan10506

Description
There have been many goalie-to-NJD scenarios on ACGM, most of which do not match either historical norms for goalie trades nor match Devils GM public comments on moving goalies mid-season.

I mentioned this in another post, so figured I would make similar ACGM based off the comp.

LAK 2022-23 -- I think if NJD makes any deal in-season for a goalie, it would look a little like LAK deal last year. The Kings had been limiting shots better than most teams, but goaltending was near bottom of league. They acquired a rental goalie and dman and saw their defensive numbers jump. Looking at team ranks before and after Trade Deadline,

Category…………….Before….After
…Shots allowed……..11th….7th
…Save percentage….31st….6th
…Goals allowed……..22nd…2nd

One of beneficial portions of the Kings deal was that Gavrikov extended only 2-years. They have a lot of young dmen in system and they didn’t block their future roads to NHL.

DEVILS 2023-24 -- Fitzy may be looking at similar deal, but I still believe adding a dman is his priority. Today, we are in similar boat as LAK last year, where team defense is alright, but goaltending is a detriment (one could argue Kings situation was harder with a team legend in net making $5.8m). Looking at current NHL ranks,

Category………………………..……ALL….5v5

Shot attempts allowed………..3rd….4th
Unblocked shots allowed…….5th….5th
Shots allowed…………………….10th…14th
Scoring chance allowed…..…..5th…3rd
Scoring chance shots allow….9th…10th

Save percentage…………………31st….28th
Goals allowed……………………..29th…26th

So if we were to make a similar deal for NJ this year, this is what we would be looking for

(A) rental goalie playing above average with selling team.
(B) Dman with 2-3 years in deal (or on final year but willing to extend short-term).
(C) all fits in cap. We have about $1.5m to work with (after trade).

Some examples of I came up with are below. Obviously, a wide range of scenarios, costs, camp impacts. Open to hearing more ideas.

  1. Mrázek, Petr ($1,900,000 retained)

I think Detroit has been so bad defensively/in net that we don't know who the starter is, we're playing all 3 and hoping 1 of them can make a save

Habs wouldn’t want to lower Matheson’s potential return by packaging him with Allen.

      1. You have to find a team that needs a defenseman AND a goaltender, so it considerably limits the trade partners.
      2. The acquiring team has to fit nearly $9M, so you're either retaining on multiple years or taking on undesirable cap.

I don't think there's a chance they're traded together. It could work with Lindstrom, Harris, Kovacevic though.

Matheson has played very well this year…and is playing as #1 in Montreal’s very young blueline. He would be 2nd or even 3rd pair on some contenders.

Trying to add dman here. Dougie is hurt…Graves and Severson are gone.

Just need a good steady veteran dman who can control the puck, get possession to n-zone.

Would like a 2nd back for that Detroit deal ideally. Maatta isn't physical but it's very steady third pairing guy that can play second pair. Would be a good partner for Hughes of Hughes is playing the right side.

Detroit is in a similar boat where we need better team defense, so maybe not want to move these guys.

His points look decent, but anyone actually watching the games will tell you he's playing terribly. Anyone who plays as many minutes in as much situations as he does is bound to pick up tons of secondary assists. The time to trade him was last year, when he was actually playing great. There's a reason Pittsburgh, a team that wants to contend every year, traded him.

Would they be willing to move goalies mid-seasons? I suppose if it came to that. Any picks would be on table…as long as young, core guys aren’t taken off roster, I think anything is on the table.

Seamus Casey wouldn’t be part of deal like this. Can take the picks though.

-Bahl out of a tough 2LD role
-Miller for a more trustworthy/quality option
-Potentially a guy to ensure Nemec can slide another ELC year.

      A playoff lineup of:
      Siegs-Hamilton
      ?????-Marino
      Hughes-Nemec

      Bahl/Miller as 7D

The question mark would be a guy who can handle very tough minutes in a shutdown pair (for example recently the job of the Marino pair was to shutdown McDavid and Pastrnak lines), kill penalties, and move the puck.

First 2 guys that pop into my head for that role are Brady Skjei and Marcus Pettersson
