There's no way, unless you left off a couple of firsts coming to the Bruins.

As a Habs fan, I appreciate another Habs fan seeing this as a terrible trade proposal.
If we're being fair,
(1) the value of Poitras is higher than Monahan, to start with;
(2) Monahan has more values IN the Habs lineup than out, and I believe Habs will resign him;
(3) regardless of NHL-wide perceived value for Monahan, if the Habs get anything lower than a 1st round pick for Monahan, they will opt to re-sign him.

Question: is it legal in the CBA to make a deal with a player to re-sign him in UFA, but still trade him as a rental to finish the year with another team? We have not seen this often...

It would take much more than that to pry Poitras away from the Bs

You can have a wink wink, nudge nudge deal that you'll offer him X AAV on a next deal, but no official deal, as any deal signed before UFA would be an extension.

The reason you don't see it often is that you risk the player not coming back. You agree to X AAV, but maybe his new team offers him more. Or maybe he just really likes the new city/team and wants to stay. If you go from a non playoff team to a new team that makes a deep run, and they want to keep you for more years, maybe that option becomes more appealing. And because they no official deal could be reached with his old team before he left, there's nothing stopping him from moving on.

It's a gamble, unless the deal you plan on offering is higher than they can get in FA anyways.
