Try to get Huberdeau going

Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 23, 2023
Published: Dec. 23, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I do understand the need for the Flames to do a rebuild/retool with all of the pending UFAs. However, I would like the entertain the idea of the Flames finding former Panthers players (ie. Duclair) as a spark for Huberdeau to at least be more competent and not be complete cap dead weight for the Flames.
Also, will the Toronto Maple Leafs revisit the Tanev trade and maybe consider swapping goalies?
Even though Philadelphia is considered retooling/rebuilding team, will their position in the playoff bubble justify a Noah Hanifin trade? I will let the comments decide.

Trade Tanev (50%RS) and Dan Vladar to Toronto for Ilya Samsonov, 3rd round pick 2024 (from NYI) and 3rd round pick 2025

Trade Lindholm to San Jose for Anthony Duclair, conditional 2nd round pick 2024 and conditional 2nd round pick 2025

Conditions: if San Jose does not win the 2024 draft lottery, they can choose whether to keep the 2024 or 2025 2nd round pick;
-> if San Jose wins the 2024 draft lottery they will keep the 2024 pick but lose the 2025 pick

Trade Hanifin (50%RS) to Philadelphia for Nick Seeler, Helge Grans, conditional 2nd round pick 2024 and conditional 3rd round pick 2025

Conditions: if Philadelphia misses the 2024 playoffs, they can choose whether to keep the 2nd round pick or 3rd round pick
->if Philadelphia makes the 2024 playoffs, they lose the 2024 2nd round pick and 2025 3rd round pick gets converted to 2025 2nd round pick
->if Philadelphia wins a round in the 2024 playoffs, both the 2024 2nd round pick and the 2025 3rd round pick get converted to 2024 1st round pick and 2025 2nd round pick

Lineup after trades:
Huberdeau/Zary/Duclair
Sharangovich/Kadri/Pospisil
Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman
Ruzicka/Dube/Greer
Weegar/Andersson
Oesterle/DeSimone
Seeler/Gilbert

Duclair isn't gonna fix the worst contract in the league

Lmao. Oh god this is definitely not it.

All these returns are brutal for the Flames and none of them are going to help the Huberdeau issue. His problem is self confidence and trading for random middle 6 and depth players just because he knows them isn't going to fix that. He needs to get out of his own head and the best way to do that is take all the pressure off the team to succeed. Build an environment where it's fun for him to play, the same way adding 2 energetic rookies to Kadri's line revitalized his game

Duclair isn’t a bad idea, but sharks pass without a contract in place! I like Lindholm but 2nd plus Duclair for 2 months of lindholm during a rebuild seems like a waste of a 2nd if he walks this off-season.
And if there is a contract in place this is a bad underpayment for lindhom

I agree, but giving him a player he knows and was successful with in the past is a decent idea! Having a comfort level with a player helps a guy when he is slumping.
Though this specific trade is bad for both clubs! Lindholm is worth way more to a team with a chance at resigning him and sharks shouldn’t be giving up 2nds for rentals

He knows Pelletier and had success with him just last year. He only played 1 season with Duke, as in 20/21 he played primarily with Wennberg and Hornqvist, while Duke played almost strictly with Barkov and Verhaeghe

The trade is illogical for both teams. The logic that went into the post is absurd. To me it's like how Habs fans were trying to ship Drouin to Colorado for years to reunite him with MacKinnon. And now that he's finally there he sucks. Good players can work with anyone. Huberdeau is having a mental block, a guy like Duclair isn't going to fix that

I’m not dismissing your points as they are valid, but I think you’re dismissing Duclair’s Speed, Shot & Aggression. If any Flames Player could replicate that, it’d probably be Martin Pospisil

Next, Huberdeau was very successful with a Gritty Centre in Sam Bennett (I highly doubt he comes back to CGY though). Their combined Speed, Grit and Aggression seemed to create more time, room and space for Huberdeau to work with. Coleman’s okay, but he’s slower and less skilled with his shot and Backlund doesn’t bring much aggression at all and is rather average offensively

Johnny Gaudreau is struggling, is it all in his head too, or is missing the old Monahan + Lindholm, and then Lindholm + Tkachuk possibly his issue as well!??

Maybe Duclair isn’t “The Fix” and certainly not for this terrible proposal, but for say, Adam Vladar or something around Ruzicka or Dube, why not!? I’d just want Alex Young or a mid-pick/prospect attached if we’re giving up one of our RFA’s. Duclair does bring a good game and I imagine would be fun for Huberdeau to play with again…

Otherwise, my vote again is to put Pospisil (or Mangiapane) at RW with Huby & Backs to see what that looks like. Coleman doesn’t need either of them for his game to be effective, whereas Huby & Mang definitely need Backlund more imo

All terrible deals for the Flames.

@KingofRnR I agree 100% with @Ledge_And_Dairy on Huberdeau and Duclair.

I might consider Duclair for Vladar if San Jose adds a 4th round pick or something. Not because I want Duclair but because it opens up a spot in the NHL for Dustin Wolf, costs us less than 1 mil in cap space this year and frees up 2.2 mil in cap next year.

I don't think I'm dismissing Duclair at all. I am well aware of what type of player he is and I think he would be a very solid addition to a lot of contenders.

The problem I have here is people keep looking for external solutions to Huberdeau when it's clearly an internal problem.

He had success with Bennett (a gritty center as you described) and Duclair (a speedy winger) in the 21/22 season yes. But he also had lots of success the year before on a line with Wennberg and Hornqvist in 20/21. And the same thing the previous 2 years with Barkov and Dadonov. He is a skilled player who should absolutely be able to find success regardless of his linemates. To me this is really not that different from Markstrom's mental block last year.

Why couldn't Skinner recreate the success he had with Eichel and Reinhart from the year he was traded to Buffalo but then gound his way again playing with a low expectations team after they sold everyone. Because it was a mental block. Im willing to bet Huberdeau is constantly thinking about how he's being paid X and not producing Y. I'm also willing to bet the same thing happened to Skinner but when that pressure was taken off him he stopped thinking about it so much
