Description

Benning is a defensive defenseman that Friedman identified as a potential fit earlier in the season. San Jose should be looking to move assets out. The contract and term are a good fit for Blackwood, especially for next season after Toronto signs Nylander. Not sure about going after Logan Couture. He could be made available, but the term and retention are problematic. Benning and Couture have been injured but are close to a return. It is possible that if Toronto decides to waive Samsonov for a conditioning stint in the AHL, another team claims him. An easy attempt at a reclamation project. Chicago does fit that possibility.

$4m retained for 4 more years would be eye-wateringly expensive, almost certainly a price that no team in the NHL would be willing to pay for a player in their 30s. The price for that plus Blackwood (worth around a second) and Benning (worth maybe a third) would start with 2 1sts, and you would still need to add on to that. Couture doesn't bring enough value to justify paying that price, but the Sharks wouldn't retain that kind of money for less.

I agree that the cost to aquire Couture, given his age and the term wouldn't make sense. But it sure would be fun.

Chicago is not putting in a waiver claim on a $3.6m struggling goalie on an expiring deal. No point in bringing Samsonov in as a reclamation project if he can just walk at the end of the season. If you want the Hawks to take him then attach a draft pick and perhaps Chicago will be interested.

That is beside the point. Either way, TOR is going to have to pay for us to take Samsonov's contract. The only thing adding Murphy does is make the price higher.

Well then you better hope Samsonov turns it around because nobody is taking his contract off the Leafs hands without them compensating a team to do so.
