Only 1 trade at the deadline

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 28, 2023
Published: Dec. 28, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Seattle is on pace for under 80 points right now. The odds the make the playoffs are crazy low.

Samsonov provides to value in this deal. He is simply for cap purposes.

Is this enough? I personally think they need 2 adds on D.

Thoughts?

A top pair right handed shooting defenceman with multiple years on his deal left costs more than that. IF Seattle decides to move him (big if) they’ll be a bunch of teams in the mix and this offer is easily beat.

He has this year and next year on his contract. 1st + 3rd for him. 3rd for Daccord. Seems reasonable. I doubt it is much short. Maybe 1st + Niemela instead but I would rather keep him.

1st + 3 x 3rds + Sammy? Is that more fair?

Personally Daccord is playing very well on an extremely cheap contract through next year. Larsson is also locked up next year reasonably. The first is the only piece that's not either worthless or worse (Samsonov) or meh at best (picks not the first). Bad deal for Seattle.

Any team looking for a defenceman would pay that for a top right handed shot - you have to beat their offers. Ben Chiarot and David Savard both were dealt as rentals and went for a cost around 1st + prospect + mid round pick, so Larsson being better than both of those players plus a season longer on his deal would cost more than that.

You’re likely looking at something around 1st + 3rd + Niemela as just the base price for Larsson alone, then you have to add something to beat the other teams offers. & then there’s the fact that you’re trying to dump Samsonov on them which probably costs a 4th round pick or equivalent alone to done. I highly doubt Daccord is looked at by Toronto, he’s not much of an upgrade on Jones so why bother spending assets on him just to lose either him or Jones to waivers when Woll returns? Smarter to send Samsonov to the minors to hopefully regain his game and then have 3 goalies available for playoffs. But sure, let’s say Daccord is a 3rd round pick acquisition cost:

Toronto gets:
Larsson
Daccord

Seattle gets:
2024 1st
2024 3rd
Niemela
Robertson? (Something to put the offer over the top, he’s maybe worth a 3rd)
2024 4th
Samsonov
2025 3rd

Is all that really worth Larsson? They’ll likely be looking at smaller adds and looking for the defensive overhaul in the summer.

I think with that valuation you're a bit short on both players. I would say more even value is something like Niemelä and first and third round picks for Larsson unretained and a second round pick (or whatever the prospect equivalent of that is for Toronto) for Daccord. I make those valuations with the assumption all picks will be later in the round given Toronto's status as a playoff contender.

However, I don't really believe Seattle is going to be super willing to sell either player barring an offer too good to refuse (which would be more on top of what I said above) given their franchise outlook. They're by no means out of the playoff race yet, and even if they end up outside the playoff picture and selling at the deadline, they'll be gunning for a return to the postseason and beyond next year. Larsson and Daccord, important as they are to the Kraken currently, would be much more useful in that effort than a package of primarily futures. For that reason, I don't see Larsson, Daccord, or really any of Seattle's important contributors under contract/with RFA control past this season going anywhere this trade deadline.

SEA says no they aint moving daccord

I could see them move Larsson for a 1st + 3rd but Daccord no hes the future in net so they aint moving him lul. Why would they have interest in Sammy to when they have Dreidger and Grubauer

Its just one of those trades that makes sense for us but not for them
