Lowered expectations at TDL but increased cap space

Created by: KentMcNally

Description
If Montreal cannot get exactly what they want in straight player trades for the suspected trade bait (Monahan, Allen and Savard) then maybe they trade them at a lower return in recognition of the fact that the cap space they gain by trading these guys can be used to facilitate other trades.
Monahan is having a good season and could get a late 1st round pick plus a prospect, but maybe not. Could try to sign Monahan again in the off-season (at the right price) if the Habs want his veteran presence back for next year.
Savard might get a late first round pick.
Allen's play has dropped off since the start of the year. I think that clearing out his salary should be the main goal. Whatever draft pick they get for him (2nd rounder at best) may not even make the NHL, but having an extra $3.8M to either spend in the off season or to take on a cap dump from another team for a better pick or prospect has decent value.
Plus I think it is time to see what Primeau can do as a regular backup goalie.
I am approaching this from the perspective of creating over $9M in cap space for Montreal as the ultimate goal. This would mean they could take on a bad expiring contract for a high value asset (either at the trade deadline or in the off season).

I’d think NJD would just be offering a 3rd if anything. Not much need for a 3.5 mill scratcher RD next year

That works. I imagine the Hurricanes would not want to give up one of their alternate captains, even though Martinook is not producing much offensively.

Given how doubtful Freddie looks to come back... I'd say PK-Allen would be our tandem next year

Yah... plus Martinook is a key role-player while TDA just sits in the press box almost every game

I would think they would try trading him somewhere in the off season, when it will be easier to move him. I just viewed it as Carolina needing some help in goal (not much). Maybe Allen finds his form on a better team and helps the Hurricanes this year, which is important, considering Carolina seems to be in a win now mode and their goaltending has been spotty.

Doubtful. He wouldn’t give up much last season for Tank and Kane, I don’t see him giving up that much, here.

Drury traded a roster player (Blais), prospect (Skinner) a conditional 1st and conditional 4th round pick for Tarasenko, so he clearly did give up more than this for Tarasenko. You can't count Kane since Kane forced his way to the Rangers with a gun at Chicago's GM's head. Here, they are trading a 2nd round pick plus a prospect for a C/RW that bolsters their depth for the playoffs and also would be cheap enough to sign next season if he plays well. Fair trade in my book.

I’ve actually been very impressed with David Savard this season, hasn’t played this well since his Columbus days, but that does still strike me as a Habs homer return. I don’t think there’s a 2nd rd pick out there for David Savard at the moment, to say nothing of an additional 3rd on top of that.
Nevertheless I wouldn’t mind Fitzgerald to kick the tiers on Savard ahead of the TDL given that Siegenthaler and Hamilton are likely out up until the playoffs begin.
