Finding a 3C Long Shot Idea

Created by: edeangel84
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 12, 2024
Published: Jan. 12, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Smith has a long term injury that lasts months this works because of LTIR.
Trades
PIT
  1. Mittelstadt, Casey
Additional Details:
I understand Buffalo probably isn’t looking to trade Mitts and if they could get a 2nd plus an NHL ready RHD that would beat this offer. It’s just an idea considering he will be an RFA and there’s also the possibility they could move on and put their money elsewhere given their depth of forward prospects.
BUF
  1. Broz, Tristan [Reserve List]
  2. Nedeljkovic, Alex
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  4. 2025 3rd round pick (PIT)

I'd definitely like Mittelstadt, but not sure Ned would be an attractive piece to them as i would assume by trading someone like Casey they're then signaling no playoffs.

I'm fine with moving mittelstadt, but not for a quantity return or futures.

I think futures is fine but it has to be quality futures that they can flip for a RHD in the offseason. Kind of like the Horvat trade where they got a high value 1st and flipped it for Hronek.

I’m not sure Pittsburgh has the pieces buffalo is looking for in return for a player like Casey Mittelstadt. Odds are pretty good Buffalo tries to keep him, but if they are open to trading him, you’re right to think it would be for a better offer than this. I think only Brian Rust might be of interest to Buffalo from Pittsburgh’s roster, and even that is a bit of a stretch.

There is nothing worthy in this offer, that may make Sabres going for it.

As for Mittelstadt, I did not hear anything about extension - either ways.

Teams don’t look to move 1sts all that often. I think a 2nd and a top 4 RHD would be your best return for him. We just don’t have the RHD to trade.

1sts get moved all the time. Especially when you're asking for a productive young player with team control. RHD would be ideal but if that's not out there then they need to get the assets that they can flip for a RHD. This just isn't enough.

Agreed
@edeangel84
Offering a UFA goalie & some other pieces we don’t care much to have just isn’t gonna get a trade done
We most likely sign Mitts to a long term deal anyways

I never said it was great did I? A small amount of reading comprehension would tell you I said “long shot”.

No. This is a no shot. It is a horrible offer.

I understand what you typed. Perhaps you need to take a gander at what horrible means.

He's got a 10-team no trade list. It's possible BUF isn't on it.

Sorry, actually misread the details. He's got a full NMC now and a 10-team no trade starting in July 2026.

What do you think your 3rd line center (that’s what he’d be to us) is worth?

What do you think your 3rd line center (that’s what he’d be to us) is worth?[/quote] There are recent comparisons for Casey's value.
Newhook was traded for 31st and 37th OA
Hagel was traded for 16th OA and a 2024 first.
Casey has out performed Newhook while he is par with Hagel the last two seasons.
Braden scores more goals but Casey gets more assists.
Casey plays center, is strong along the boards and plays a decent 200 foot game.

This offer is not commensurate with the value of his skill set especially at $2,500,000

He'd be the best 3rd line center in the league lol. He is a 2nd line center. We ain't trading. Especially for garbage

If you hit a grand slam of a trade offer you’d get the Newhook trade. That’s a perfect scenario. He’s a good player but he isn’t special.
