Why?

Do we just not care about first round picks anymore? Two first rounders for a guy who's never scored 20 goals? Who also has 8 more years left at $6 million. This is a Jim Benning move if I've ever seen one.

I doubt the hawks are using a retention slot for only a 4th.

SJ and Tampa declined.
Chicago might accept the last trade.
The first two trades looked ridiculous.

Yeah. I won't pretend Katchouk is worth a whole lot, although he has been showing signs of life this year. But, unless this is a last minute move and we have the retention slot to spare, which is entirely possible, I doubt CHI retains for a 4th. But at this point, people are just being greedy with the retention. His cap hit is already lower than the league minimum. Figure out a way to make the cap work. Slapping retention on there is the easy way out and this just isn't how GM's do things.

No offense, but if I were a real professional GM and another GM asked me to retain such a minuscule amount on an already below league minimum cap hit, I would think that GM was incompetent.

I think this is 100% correct.

It has already been determined that Katchouk has little to no value, he passed through waivers unclaimed. So the retention slot is the real value here and I can’t see the Hawks wasting it by holding $300,000. There are other players that can be retained on that could result in a bigger/better return (TJ, Mrazek, possibly Murphy) or even as a third party retention to assist two other teams complete a deal.

It’s similar to the bujstad deal to Edmonton last TDL

If CHI still has a retention slot at the deadline then this is a no brainer move. 3rd party teams that retain usually get compensated a 4th or a 5th for their retention. So this is the same thing but CHI only has to retain 300k

Sure, on deadline day, with no other prospective trades in the works that require retention, fine. Not exactly a no brainer, if you are Kyle Davidson early in your career, trying to set and stick to a standard and not be a sloppy pushover, but not exactly a make or break deal for his career, either. Plus, CHI is gonna have to move some bodies when guys start coming back from IR. You'd probably have a better shot at waiting for him to get through waivers again, and then trading for him. That way he is already in the AHL playing big minutes with no cap hit. Then you can bring him up for the playoffs when his cap hit doesn't even matter.
