Description
Assuming Michael isn't implicated in the hockey Canada thing obv.

Anyway the basic premise of the trade for each team is as follows:

Toronto: guys who can play now, but younger and under team control. Basically a soft sell.

Edmonton: high end winger at a low aav to help their top 6 in light of Kane being poo

Devils: getting a centre who has played 1C before to fill in while Hughes is out as well as taking a cheap flyer on a goalie who was very good as recently as last year (outdueling Vasilevski)

Specifics can of course be changed, small bits like picks or whatever but what is shown here is the main part of the moves.
Trades
1.

What need is filled?

Domi doesn’t fill any need

Samsonov doesn’t fill any need.

The team with no goalie, playing a bottom 6 centre on your 2nd line doesn't have a need for a middle 6 centre and a goalie?

Uhh, Domi never got waived? And being waived does not mean a player is worthless or bad, especially at half cost

Faceoffs are an overvalued stat. You need good players lmao. Domi is much better today

New Jersey hard passes for sure. McLeod is doing a great job as a #3C and he is a RFA at years end. He will command a raise at years end but New Jersey keeps his rights.

Domi has been good for the Leafs but he isn't an upgrade over McLeod and he is a pending UFA.
Sammy has a been unplayable this year. So this does not fill a need for New Jersey.

McLeod is an rfa, Max is a ufa
Sammy got waived and is as bad as Vanacek
Max has 4 pts more. Where's the better?

A team with no goalie taking a cheap bet in a market where Goalies almost never get traded on a guy who has had like 10 bad games after being great the last year, giving him a fresh start definitely fills a need

And Domi has been a 1c (on a bad team). They need a guy who can play up the lineup. They're having trouble even making the playoffs right now and having a bottom 6 C in a top 6 is a great way to make sure you miss

Either way McLeod is more valuable than Domi and New Jersey doesn't remotely consider this.

Domi at the deadline and retained would still fetch something around a 2nd round pick.

Domi was a #1C on a bad team like 5 years ago... He is a serviceable middle 6 forward, preferable playing outside of your top 6. Domi would definitely help most teams, NJD included. BUT not at the expense of McLeod. McLeod has more value than Domi. If they were both UFA's their value would be similar but I would still give McLeod the edge based on his size and based on his astronomical faceoff percentage (which does matter). But he is not a UFA. He is an RFA.

I agree that NJD can use a bit of a shakeup but this isn't it.

As for Sammy - I can understand the logic of wanting to attempt to re-invigorate Sammy. I think he absolutely can bounce back. But at 50% cap space, a team may take him on, but only for free. He would not have any value to him. Or they may give a useless depth prospect that has zero value.

Lmao I always love when guys don't have arguments other than homerism for not liking trades. They always bring out the "if he is so good, why trade him" bit. Every time.

I already explained that in the title and desc. We're selling and want younger guys with control in return.

RFAs get traded for UFAs all the time when the slot is needed. That simply isn't an issue.

And let's not eval with points yeah? Especially not with your guy being in the top 6 while Toronto is so deep Domi is only getting 10-12 mins a night

In terms of Sammy, find me a goalie with his recent record, for this cheap (acq and aav) that a team is willing to sell. There isn't one.

Here’s a list of centers on the devils I’d rather play than Domi

Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Michael McLeod Dawson Mercer, Erik Haula.

Moving McLeod for Domi would make our PK worse, our team much worse defensively, older, and not improve our top 6.

The devils need a competent goalie. Samsonov is basically the only goalie in hockey who’s been worse than Vanacek. No interest in him at all.

Faceoff % does not matter. That has been beyond proven.

And Domi is better than McLeod today. Which is what they need desperately.

A purely offensive forward is not something NJD needs.

You arent finding a goalie with history as good as Sammy's at a price like this, or even a willing seller.
Domi makes your top 6 better today, and eventually will slot in as a high octane 3C to help you score goals once you get healthy

He would be a significant downgrade on all sides of the puck than Mcleod.... and a UFA at end of year. Samsonov has been a hot mess. I want none of it.

Further, it adds to our cap...forcing us to carryover into 2024-25.

Add Knies AND your best pick.
