Rutherford and Allvin have both come out and said they're not trading any prospects who have not turned pro, so that eliminates Brzuterwicz, Lekkerimaki, and Wallinder from trades. The only Canuck prospects being moved would be those playing in the AHL: Podkolzin, Raty, Bains, Hirose, McWard, Woo, Silvos, etc.

Would they retain on Pettersson?

Personally I would have no problem paying a top-10 protected 1st for him...but not sure we have the cap space.

Remove Lekkerimaki and it’s a fair deal for the first trade.

Add Bahl (keep our 5th or grab oconnor with a better pick here) who would be moved in this situation and retain. Losing a player, gaining cap space

Two prospects and a first for an expiring contract? Still huge overpay

It's gonna cost a lot more than that for Marcus Pettersson @ 50% for 2 years.

Hronek, Provorov, and Chychrun all went for 1st + 2nd+ with 2 years remaining at similar cap hits and no retention.

Having a division rival like the Pens holding 2M in cap hit across two seasons would cost an extra 1st at least, based on retaining prices over the last two years.

Hronek had RFA control, Chych had 3 years and was more highly regarded, provorov

Chychrun had 3 years, Hronek had 2+ RFA+RHD. The Provorov deal was just a mess all around.

1st+3rd for Pettersson, 2nd for retention. And I’d be willing to get into a bidding war like I’ve said countless rines

Still overpay. Horvat (with extension) got 1st, prospect, but the Canucks had to take Beauvillier's salary

NJD gives: Bahl, 2nd, 3rd
NJD gets: Pettersson (50%), O'Connor

1st or Bahl+2nd = Pettersson
3rd = O'Connor

Pettersson is playing bigger minutes than Chychrun, Hronek, or Provorov did before their trades. Pettersson is very important to the Penguins success, especially in the twilight of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang's careers.

If Pettersson is being traded 1st + 2nd has to be the starting price, that's the going rate for a Top-4 defenseman on a contract as good as his.

The Penguins and Devils are fighting for the same playoff spots, they cannot afford to give up Pettersson for a 1st + 2nd + 3rd and retain on him. If the Penguins are retaining on Pettersson, the ask has to be two 1sts, or a 1st + blue-chip prospect. It doesn't make sense for the Pens to gift a prime-age defenseman with retention to a divisional rival. The Pens absolutely get a better offer from another team outside of the division. You'd have to think that @ 2.0125M teams like the Leafs, Oilers, Sabres, Stars would all be willing to beat that offer.

Okay, so Toronto offers 1st + Minten + 3rd for Pettersson @ 50% retained. What is the Devils offer?

...none of those are better than that offer and I despise the Leafs.

1st + Minten + 3rd > 2 1sts (1st=1st, Minten + 3rd > 1st)

1st + Minten + 3rd > 1st + 2nd + Bahl (1st = 1st, Minten >> 2nd, 3rd < Bahl)

1st + Minten + 3rd >>> Casey + 2nd (Minten > Casey, 1st + 3rd >>>> 2nd)

The offer has to be better than those outside the division, otherwise Pittsburgh has no incentive to bolster a rival.

If the Devils are offering for Pettersson @50% retained, I think it would have to be 1st + Casey + 2nd to start.

According to all current prospect rankings, Minten is much better than Casey

https://thehockeywriters.com/nhl-top-100-prospects-ranking/ - Minten is 58th, Casey is 73rd.

https://theathletic.com/5197201/2024/01/16/nhl-players-prospects-ranking-under-23/ - Minten is 150th, Casey is unlisted.

Heard all that about Shakir before we traded him. Traded and then magically he shoots up the rankings immediately (because after the trade people put the tape on and realized what devils fans already knew)

Minten can’t even outproduce Casey
Minten is a forward in the WHL.
Casey is a dman in the NCAA. Guess who produces more
