Hanifin Deal

Created by: Celtics21
Team: 2023-24 Boston Bruins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2024
Published: Jan. 24, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The third line becomes the defacto defensive zone line. Nice to see Lauko return to form next to Frederic (seems to be a common theme)

The fourth line is a tad more offensive than normal. They need to keep Poitras at center
Trades
BOS
  1. Hanifin, Noah ($775,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Guarantee they get him without giving up a number 1. Losing Lohrei is tough, but Hanifin essentially replaces him long term either way, Trade Ullmark in the offseason to recoup picks.
CGY
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
  2. Harrison, Brett
  3. Lohrei, Mason
  4. 2026 2nd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Lohrei is a good D prospect with significant offensive upside. This deal is going to be dependent on Calgary’s assessment of him, but a cost controlled close to NHL ready defenseman with top 4 potential is interesting.

Add a second round pick and a decent prospect like Harrison. Grz simply lowers the amount of retention Boston asks for and they should be able to trade him.

I could see it if Calgary views Lohrei as having 1st round value

Calgary has to do this. I'm sure some fans will come on here shooting it down but it's exactly the type of deal they should be looking to make.

Add in the fact that he could "demand" a move to Boston...heck ya.

Even if it is high second round value, it still pencils out.

This draft is weaker depth wise, so the open question is do you take an NHL ready guy for later this year who becomes a FA quicker or a draft pick,

I’d do this if I was Calgary, but I am high on Lohrei and low on this draft, I don’t believe you will find a D in this draft past 20 whose in Lohrei’s class in terms of talent

Lohrei projects to be a Hanifin type, under team control, only in his 1st full year of pro hockey and has been improving in every game he's in. I'm not sold on sending him out for Hanifin. You're going to be spending $7-$8 mil to keep him? then you have McAvoy($9.5), Lindholm($6.5), Carlo($4.1).

I think it's more important to get a Middleton type right now, I don't think Hanifin is what the Bruins defense needs.

Yeah Lohrei's value is that he costs under a million and will be far cheaper than Hanifin for the duration of whatever deal Hanifin signs (probably by more than half realistically since he'll be an RFA for more than half the next 8 years). I think they could pursue other d like Pesce, Roy or Chychrun with some of that money and still have left overs for cheaper 3rd RD or for spending up front. I have also heard Minny fans saying they don't like Middleton and that if he were on a team without their cap constraints he wouldn't be a top 6 D but who knows if that was accurate or not, I don't pay much if any attention to the Wild.

Do we really need him? I like the nostalgia look back to last year, but outside of a Boqvist for Greer type swap … I don’t see a reason to over complicate this.

Hanifin is a solid defensive player with some offensive upside. When he was drafted, I think the hope was he’d become a two way with potentially dominant offense. Hes better defensively and worse offensively than projected.

I see Lohrei as an offensive defenseman. His stick handle has the potential to be top 5 percentile for a defenseman, but he’s going to be a wall off type defensively.

I think people are sleeping a tad on what Wotherspoon is and how he’s played. I’m fine with him as our 3rd D and moving Forbort to the 7th guy

No reason to trade assets for Hanifin when it's well known he's interested in coming back to Boston in the offseason.
