Domi isn’t returning more than he did last season when he was playing much better

He was getting more minutes last year on a bad team in Chicago. Given opportunity in a top six role his numbers will increase.

I do like Domi for the Canucks. I think he probably gets about a 2nd, so this is about reasonable. I do think his good playoffs last year probably helps his value and the fact that he scored more points with a bigger opportunity in Chicago last year during the regular season last year probably isn't a mark against him.

I don't think Leafs are selling like this.

Sammy is ranked 47 out of 55 goaltenders this year currently. The almost worst goaltender in the league does not get a return of a 3rd, you'd be lucky to get a 5th at 50% retained. And even at 50% retained the Kings want absolutely nothing to do with him, that is a broken man all due to the Leafs media and fan base so keep your Frankenstein.

Canucks wouldn’t give more than a 3rd for him. Even then not sure they’d even be interested. Only has 4 goals, having a down year offensively, and is awful defensively

I’d much rather Bertuzzi over Domi if we make a trade with Toronto

If anything Toronto would be bringing in someone for a playoff run if there's any cap space available

I am not against doing this to get some draft capital back. But you’re asking for too high of draft picks even with retention. If they make a couple of these moves early they can maybe go after some D and F depth with term. PS Brodie needs to be in that sell. Doesn’t matter what he goes for, but that cap space is much more valuable than he is.

I don't think Domi would fit the Canucks. As mentioned, he is an absolutely defensive liability and just kind of throws the puck into the slot and hopes for the best. He'd be a 4th liner at best for the Canucks and be scratched worse than Kuzmenko since Domi can't even score. Lafferty >>>> Domi

Canucks accept.
Domi mentioned that he loves coach Rick.
He could be a good fit for the Canucks 🤔
He usually plays on the second line or third line with the Leafs.

I think the fact he's a center actually really matters. I think him with Miller on the wing could be interesting. Miller can be elite on the wing defensively, and that would be a very heavy forecheck that would fit Tocchet's system well. Worst case scenario you move him to wing, and I think he can play in the top 6 just fine.

I think his speed really matches what the Canucks want to do.

I just don't think his responsibility (or lack thereof) while attempting to be a play maker is what VAN should be after. Sportsnet has a pretty good article about the Leafs as a whole, but it highlights some of what I'm talking about with Domi trying to force offense rather than play reliably: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/systems-analyst-how-one-oilers-goal-highlighted-maple-leafs-biggest-issues/

VAN is after a centre, and it is important that Domi can play that, but I think it would create more headaches than it would solve if they were to try and bring him in. In a perfect world, I'd say Drury (CAR) or Frost (PHI) but they'd be quite expensive and neither of their respective teams would have much interest in trading them.. Guess it's Henrique, lol.

I'd love Frost. I don't know if he's still in the doghouse with Torts and so I'm not sure if he's available now frown

Looking at the link, the analysis is off, that is the story of Knies making mistake after mistake. Domi is a little in elegant in a couple spot, but all in all is good. The pass in the play is fine and in the other plays in the montage they are also fine, the problem is the Leafs just don't battle for pucks.

Especially in the play broken down when the puck goes across there is no way the Edmonton player should end up on top of Knies, that should be a least a 50/50 puck and there's no way he should be able to move out with speed. Domi should be pressuring Edmonton skater through the neutral zone, and although he does it a little inelegantly, it's hard to say if that is his fault or a system's fault. However, it works. Edmonton get's completely crossed up and yeah they enter the zone, but they do so without speed, out formation and all bunched up. Domi gets back to his own guy and is just about to take him but Knies comes streaking back with speed and takes him. That's fine, but he's taken the center position. Domi does what he's supposed to and swaps with Knies, but then Knies doesn't take the position he's taken. Imagine if a forward covered for a D and then just wandered off back to forward before the D swapped back with him. It would be on the person holding the position.

It's not surprising, Knies is a rookie, but man that is the story of Knies making multiple mistakes and honestly Domi looks pretty good to me. The pass doesn't connect, but is dangerous and can lead to a high danger chance. More importantly, the downside is very low, until Knies just doesn't battle. If Knies battles the Leafs actually are in a good spot since the puck is basically in the opposite corner, where Edmonton doesn't have support. If Knies didn't try to take the puck and on the inside and takes the player on the outside, this looks great.

I think I view the Edmonton play a bit differently. He had solid possession of the puck and there was a better play along the boards; there's no reason to turn it into a 50/50 puck battle in that instance. Especially when your team is up by 1. A risky high-danger move isn't the best play, especially in Tocchet's system, and Domi hasn't had a lot of success with them this year with just 20 assists to the season despite playing with some really talented scorers.

While Knies definitely played too passively, but even after the turnover Domi makes a misread in the neutral zone. He puts pressure on McLead despite not having his teammates back defensively and gives them easy access into the Leafs' end while also jumbling things up more. If Domi had played smarter throughout that particular play the Leafs may have held possession in the offensive zone at best, or even if they turned it over and the Oilers came back, Domi could've stayed at the first forward back (being the centre and all) and covered his guy; preventing the mix up by Knies.

Knies definitely fed into the mix up defensively, but I see that initial turnover as more of Domi's mistake than his. Knies is a rookie and gets a bit more forgiveness in my mind for that play, but Domi is a vet and should know that playing safe is better in those instances.

Of course, we're talking about one specific play. A miniscule sample size isn't the best way to analyse it, but I do think some of the passes in the video demonstrate the same problems; only the last one against Detroit and the one against the Islanders though (the rest are risky but I am okay with the play).
