Swinging Kahks

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2023-24 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 31, 2024
Published: Jan. 31, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Kak Swing No. One: SJ gets a buy low opportunity. The Rangers get a better player in the short term and also send away a cap dump for another improvement.

Kahk Swing No. Two: If the Sharks cannot or choose not to re-sign Kahkonen, they move him to a team that doesn't ask for retention. The return would be lower than if they kept money, but this gives them flex to also see if anyone is interested in a guy like Hoffman, Granlund, etc. at 50% off.

Overall, SJ walks away with Kakko, without giving up anything really important, which is a pretty big swing for them.

I like the framework of KK + BG.
The Rags need a 3C, and Sturm won't really fit that mold for them.
I'd rather see SJ keep Sturm here and do 50% on Duke for a little better return that still gives NY cap flexibility for a 3C for the playoff run.
Either way, I'd be good with something like you've made.

Rangers decline. Like sharksdoee said above, Sturm does not fill the 3C need. Rangers would just send a mid round draft pick or two for Duclair. And trade for someone like Monahan or Henrique.

While it is tempting to use Kakko to get out of the Goodrow contract, they could just buy him out in the offseason.

Thanks for the feedback!

I thought about some of the same things (Rags needing 3C). I went with this in the end because (1) they will also need to replace BG with someone (enter Sturm), and (2) this leaves them with all their picks and some cap space to try and address that other need. In other words, while it doesn't solve every problem, it does leave them in a position to make another move.

Fair enough, but I disagree about the buyout. While it's not crazy expensive and even pretty much nothing next season, that's 6 years of him on the books. I'd personally try real hard to avoid that.

If this was 2 years ago I would agree but with the cap rising over the next couple of seasons it makes a buyout more palatable. Only the 2026-27 season is where the cap hit is above $1.1M.
