Edited Feb. 2 at 5:36 a.m.. Reason: added clarification
Instead of Anderson's cap hit of $4.6 million* for three seasons, and slightly smaller compensation, I think Edmonton is better off biting the bullet for six more months and then buying Campbell out at a cost of $10.5 million spread out over 6 seasons, the cap hit never exceeding $2.6 million, and keeping the two firsts. RW is not a major weakness for the Oilers.

Late edit: original formulation had $900,000 retention; half a million makes this idea even worse for Edmonton

That's a bit of an overpayment to dump Campbell, even if Anderson wasn't going back the other way.

two firsts to dump campbell is a bit rash, especially with anderson contract coming back

The difference between these two cap dumps is not 2 firsts.

Anderson is horrible. He’s as much a cap dump as Campbell.

Really bad trade. Montreal takes this and runs. Oilers would never do it.

It would have been a better option prior to the news that 12 NHL teams have lost their TV rights and the cap may end up going down or remaining flat for several seasons because of it. Until they get new TV rights deals in place then buyouts are less likely of an option for all teams.
