Lets Talk About Sharky

Description
Should the Flames try to flip Sharangovich to a contender who needs goals?

I am not sure what his long term value is with the Flames, so if he can continue his goal scoring ways and can hit 30 by the deadline, is it worth moving him for picks, a 'project' player, or a B prospect?

Teams that could use him off the top of my head:

Islanders

Every team needs goals, but the canes are a top offensive team this year relative to underlying and counting metrics. The concern would be usage, as I don’t think he slot into the lineup to play more than 10-13 mins per night.

Would be different if he were a center.

What position does he normally play?

He seems like a shoot first type player, but the rangers need a play driver on the top line for Mika and Kreider. Also the risk of him going back down to his usual self from his Devil days

Any contending team that looks at Sharnagovich looks at his playoffs last season and how long it took him to settle into new surroundings this season. No one is taking him on at the deadline, the Flames should let this guy keep producing and if they move him after a 30+ goal season and similar production to start next season his value will be significantly higher at next years deadline.

I think the Flames would get a bit more. If you retain two years, would be big return imo. More than Monahan maybe.

        He was good in jersey.

I wouldn’t say he’ll maintain his current 20% shooting rate, but 15 is probably reasonable, he has an excellent shot.

Plays all three positions, but has mostly played the wing this year.

I liked the trade for Calgary, didn’t like the contract. 2 years seemed like the worst term. 1 year and you could have seen what you had and still had RFA rights. More years and you have more control. 2 years walks him right to UFA. Best case scenario you sell him as a rental or have to pay him a boatload of money on his next deal.

All forwards play all three positions on the ice depending on the play, but that doesn’t mean that’s the plan. Based on center ice time, he’s not going to play more mins that Aho or Staal. Winger wise, not playing more than Svech, Turbo, Jarvis or Necas - probably not more than Martinook either. He won’t be on the PK, and probably only makes the PP2. He’d play bottom 6 mins, and we already have a forward slotted lower than AAV (Bunting).

        No room.

Feel the same way. Figure moving him at the deadline or end of season is the best option from a value perspective.

I think you might have this wrong, as it seems like Sharangovich might be the player to build this around.

A young second liner with a fluid shot, who came from a skilled team is a solid asset. If they waited long enough on Zary, he's likely their top-line center. These players (Zary and Sharangovich) make a solid center duo, anchored by Backlund and Schwindt on the third and fourth lines.

To me (opinion), this says Calgary sees Kadri, Coleman, Markstrom and their potential UFAs on defense as their trade chips for a retool/rebuild with a fast transitioning. Adding a playmaker like Kuzmenko to Sharangovich might smooth things in the long-term.

Still for the rangers it needs to be definite RWer and play driver. Mika and Kreider have no trouble scoring, it’s creating 5v5 offense

You're not wrong. Keeping him could be the best option.

Like @dgibb10 said, the problem is the Flames signed him to a 2 year deal. So it comes down to a value proposition. Do you trade him at deadline or offseason to get value out of him? Do you hold and see if he continues the success and then pay him a ton of money and over a longer term? or if you hold him and he has a down season next year, you let him walk, but in the mean time, you didn't get anything for him and had him take a roster spot from a younger player who might have been able to show something.

        Who knows

I'm not a fan (just a disclaimer); I do see Calgary setting up the following two lines:

Huberdeau (if not traded)-Kadri-Coleman, which seems to work with Weegar and Andersson as top d pair.
Kuzmenko-Zary-Sharangovich, with Hanafin (if not traded)/Kylington/insert defenseman here with the new youth additions.

Seems to me like the Flames may begin to position themselves as a major player in the near future, given a new arena, cap diversions via trades and contract endings and a coach (Huska) who will grow youth correctly.
