I would offer him anything up to the amount that's covered by Carter's contract coming off the books - so $9.125mil

Is he not signing because he doesn't think it's enough, or is he not signing because he doesn't want to tie himself to the mast of a sinking ship?

If it's the first, offer him more money, if it's the second, you're ****ed, trade him for the best you can get, start the rebuild.

If the Pens think they are in playoff race (they are), what is the need to trade an upcoming UFA? All teams have upcoming UFAs, they all don't get traded.
I wouldn't believe any "reports", as 99% of the time it's just made up by reporters trying to look knowledgable.
50m for a contract that starts at the age of 30.....who would offer more? (or much more). IMO the aging Pens should start to retool

Offer 7 years, $9M. If he doesn't accept that and they're out of a playoff spot then trade him for a Lindholm-like deal and start retooling.

"It's my understanding that there may have been something offered to him in the ballpark of $50 million" Nick Kypreos said. "And as of now he's not signed. Let's just put it that way." What a terrible nothingburger. The guy is drumming up drama for the deadline talks.

That was a low offer, which is fine to start there, doesn't mean a whole lot. Nylander just got 8X11.5 but he's almost 2 years younger and Toronto's situation looks dramatically different than ours. With the salary cap increases coming up 10 will be the new 8. The max I'd give Jake is 6 X 10 or even 10.5 is fine. The problem I have is if he is a stickler for term, he's going to be 30 years old when this contract starts. I don't want to lose him now because I feel like at 6 X 10 let's say there's still decent value for him 3 or 4 years down the line (especially because we'll be more than happy to retain at that point). But if he wants an 8X10 let's say, even if everything goes perfect (no major injuries, maintains his scoring pace and doesn't slow down, etc...) what will the value be for a 34 year old with 4 years left on his deal at 10 million+ each year? We'll get something, but we'll get a lot more and would be willing to retain more the 2 last years of his deal if it was a 6 year contract so instead of trading a 34 year old with 4 years left on his deal we're trading a 34 year old with 2 years left on his deal at say 6 or 7 million each year. A lot more palatable to a contender to only be looking at 2 more years on the deal... So it's really up to Jake. If he's looking for Nylander term and money then we have to trade him. Does not fit the direction of our team...

I agree 💯 with you goguinsgo. But part of me wants pens burn it down and trade everyone and get as much as they can.
