Kent Hughes trades since taking the job

Created by: Wreckless
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 4, 2024
Published: Feb. 4, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Looking at Kent Hughes’s work since 2022:

Trades Toffoli for a 1st (Mesar) and a 5th
Trades Chiarot for a 1st and a 4th.
Trades Lehkonen for Barron and a 2024 2nd.
Trades Kulak for a 2nd (Hutson, OMFG), and a 7th.
Trades Romanov, a 3rd and a 4th for Kirby Dach.
Trades Petry and Poehling for Matheson (OMFG) and a 4th.
Acquires Calgary’s 2025 1st round for taking one year of Monahan’s contract.
Retains salary on Bonino’s deal at last year’s deadline for a 5th.
Acquires Newhook for the pick we got for Chiarot and a 2nd.
Trades Edmundson for a 3rd and a 7th. Unfortunately he got hurt or that return would have been huge at last year’s deadline.
Trades $4.5mm Hoffman contract (1 year) for $2.3mm of Petry’s salary (for 2 years), Tanner Pearson, and a 2nd, 3rd, and a 4th, all in 2025.
Trades Sean Monahan for Winnipeg’s 2024 1st.

wtf is it with habs fans and loving Zegras so much? Youd give up a top 7 pick for him when everyone in the top 7 has a higher ceiling than him? Hes a high end 2nd line C at best. Barron and a WPG 1st should be the max value for him. And even then, hes not worth it. Hes not the type of player that wins. He'll be average for 20 games, score a sick goal then go back to being average

I very much struggle to see a scenario where Allen returns a 1st, let alone without retention.

Its an Impressive Haul for Sure.
Im just hoping he dont blow it
I do like Zegras but the cost is more then i care for
We got enough people in his age group anyways

I do like Zegras , dont get me wrong
That said MTL Media would devour him whole
I feel it would be Drouin 2.0 sadly unless we found a true top 5 NHL Goalie who can bail him out on defensive blunders

There is no chance you’re getting a 1st for Allen, especially with no retention

Caufield is Zegras's Best Friend is why
Personally im good, i'd rather Suzuki's best friend Durzi as he's much cheaper
Both are PP Players who elevate our top guys play but are both defensively questionable.

There is no chance I’d give up a top 7 pick for Zegras. All this depends on where we finish in the standings. I’d probably do that with a pick in the low teens though.

He’s still young, and has been playing on a really bad team. He can and will grow. His raw talent is undeniable. St-Louis would get the maximum out of him.

Check out all those other Hughes trades listed above. He often finds a way.

Systems, and coaching. He needs to be in the right environment.

The Flyers pass, they are content with the guys they have in goal. Team could have claimed Prostetov from COL if they wanted to upgrade.

I’d argue all those trades had at least some logic or precedent.

If you viewed chiarot as a top 4 dman (he was handling top 2 minutes), that checks out.
If you view Monahan as a quality middle 6 C, that checks out
If you view Lehkonen as a top 6 forward, yeah that checks out

For Allen to justify the return of a 1st you’d have to view him as a legit top 10-15 goalie option, which seems, outlandish to say the least.

I heard that about PLD 3 times now
Not all players are created Equal

Zegras is Great but undisciplined.
Unless Caufields the dominate personality in their Friendship
I just dont see him setting his Ego aside under his 3rd coach in his Career anymore then he had the first 2.
For the right price then sure i want Zegras
But overpaying for Zegras is too much

FIFY. I added Durzi also. Arizona got him for a 2nd rounder last offseason.

You’re getting a third for Allen if you’re lucky. And Carolina doesn’t need him anymore. You can keep him.

A seasoned top 10-15 goalie option on an affordable deal for one more season would cost way more than pick #29 for two playoff runs.

I agree. The question is what’s the right price. Pick number 12 in this year’s draft? Probably the right move for both teams.

We’ll definitely keep him for anything less than a high 2nd. Montembeault is on the table also if anyone prefers to go that route.

Historically that hasn’t been the case. It takes a top 10-15 goalie to get a 1st.

I’d place Allen somewhere in the 30-40 range of my goaltender rankings for the next 2 years. Historically that’s just not a valuable piece at 4 million dollars.

Especially when you look to free agency and see a guy like DeSmith, who is better, younger, and should cost less money.

If DeSmith has any good, he wouldn’t have had zero asset value as part of two trades this past offseason.

Vanacek last got traded for a 2nd and a 3rd. Where does he rank as a goalie in this league?

DeSmith not having much trade value is my entire point.

DeSmith had BETTER numbers than Allen, was younger, and had half the cap hit. Kent Hughes was only able to get a 3rd+taking on a cap dump for him.

Vanacek was a 26 year old RFA starter with decent enough numbers. He also got just a 2nd. And I’d argue he ranked quite a bit higher than Allen at that time.

Different dynamic at the trade deadline. It’s an auction market. Allen is best short term option available. No one is close. Everyone else has risk tied to term and cap hit.

Doesn’t have to be a 1st though, could also be a 2nd +.

Once can choose to overvalue goalie stats at their own peril.

Allen also has a high cap hit and risk due to his 2nd year of term. I think it’s decently likely that a team may have to pay to dump Jake Allen this offseason if they acquire him

That’s where you’re most wrong. Whoever « rents » him this playoff runs, then has a player on a one year expiring contract this offseason. Which itself has asset value. Any decent goalie this offseason will need to be offered more than a 1 year deal. And the cap is rising. Allen’s contract has value on both fronts.

Primeau isn't great either......he definitely isn't worth a 3rd. Regardless of what you think about any of these goalies the entire leadership structure of the Flyers has said they aren't buying. They have complete faith in Errson and we are still in a rebuild. So maybe Habs fans should stop proposing goalie trades when we don't want or need one.

I can certainly bet if I offered DeSmith 4 mill for 1 year he’d take it
