Initial Creation Date: Feb. 5, 2024
Published: Feb. 5, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
These are not real trades, just hypotheticals if Detroit went a different direction in the 2020 Draft.

Obviously all hindsight and the Raymond and Wallinder picks definitely aren't bad ones.
Trades
1.
DET
  1. Sanderson, Jake
Additional Details:
Picked 4th Overall
2.
DET
  1. Peterka, John-Jason
Additional Details:
Just throwing this in there is Detroit took Sanderson, Wallinder might be redundant. Peterka seems like a player Yzerman would draft.
3.
DET
  1. Faber, Brock
Additional Details:
Detroit doesn't make the trade in draft day with LA and drafts Faber
MIN
  1. Niederbach, Theodor [Reserve List]
  2. Stange, Sam [Reserve List]

Eh, just needed to fill the roster. Him or Holl it doesn't really matter. The idea of this is to see how good that top 4 could be for years to come.

Very much so. Have alot of other options to fill 3LD too with Johansson, Buium, Cleveland or Viro. Or possibly a more veteran guy.

Ottawa also had the chance to draft JJP with the 33rd overall... took Jarventie instead. Still have hope he'll be good... would've solved our top 6 forward issue with Greig-Stu-JJP...

But yeah Sandy and Mo... ouf.

I was really surprised considering he would have had some familiarity with Stutzle.

Not to burst your bubble but minny didn’t draft Faber. They got him in the trade for fiala to the kings. So you’d need to change this to something with the kings

Yes I know that. I see my error. Put Minny in the write up. I'll change it.

I think they do. I think he was best player available. I wouldn't hate it if they took Clarke.

Even if it were, Minnesota doesn’t trade Faber for JJP straight up.

Idk the forward group is pretty weak with no legit prospect at this point. I think they'd go Benson or someone to spice it up up front

Drafting BPA is the wrong strategy in hockey.

Benson is a different draft. After Edvinsson are Eklund, Guenther, Sillinger and Coronato. I take Edvinsson over them I think.

Forwards are also easier to find I feel. That would be the biggest loss though drafting Sanderson over Raymond. Raymond is just getting better.

You are correct - very confident they would've drafted Eklund instead.

Agreed, the only pick that still makes me nauseous is the Zadina over Hughes pick. That pick set us back 2-4 years.

Can't blame Yzerman for that though. I remember going back at the last 5 years of Kenny and only seeing a couple players ever pan out. I think I take Edvinsson over Eklund. Nothing against Eklund but if I think Edvinsson is going to be a stud D, even though I just drafted a couple, I'm still taking him. Grab forwards after since I feel defensemen take a bit longer to develop.
Edvinsson over Eklund is only personal preference as I believe building a championship team starts with the back end.
