Calgary Sell

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 6, 2024
Published: Feb. 6, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames finally commit to a full rebuild. Likely never to happen though with the current ownership group, but for this we say to do.

After selling, they fall to pick 5th overall. I'll say Jersey will pick #18 since I think there make the playoffs. Other two by current placement.
#5 - Sam Dickinson
#18 - Tij Iginla
#26 - Dean Letourneau
#31 - Charlie Elick

Next season 2 retention slots for Mang and Kuzy or anyone else if needed.
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Barabosha, Artem [Reserve List]
  2. Daws, Nico
  3. Vanecek, Vitek
  4. 2024 1st round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
Daws or Schmid, they keep who they feel best about.
Ideally I would like to see one more piece added to this deal, ideally a defense prospect, so I added Barabosha. He seems interesting as he is playing in the KHL as a 19 year old, I know nothing about him other than that.
The 2024 1st transfers to a 2025 1st top 5 protected if it transfers to San Jose via the conditions of the Meier trade.
NJD
  1. Markström, Jacob ($1,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Likely won't retain salary on Markstrom but we will say in this scenario they are willing to maximize return. Don't see them wanting to eat any significant amount though, most teams would prefer to not retain for multiple years let alone significant amounts. Yes the return would likely be better.
2.
CGY
  1. Faksa, Radek ($500,000 retained)
  2. White, Gavin
  3. 2024 1st round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Dallas retains a bit of salary to help provide a bit of value to Faksa. Ideally though they are able to clear salary for next year as to extend Tanev.
I could see there be a bit of a bidding war for Tanev. Not much in the trade market for reliable right handed defenders. I think, similar to Monahan, a team will act quick in order to get their guy.
DAL
  1. Greer, AJ
  2. Tanev, Christopher ($2,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Tanev agree to an extension in Dallas. 2 Years x 3.5M.
3.
CGY
  1. Määttä, Olli
Additional Details:
Calgary will need responsible defensemen to help mentor the young guys as they come up. They are also not a very desirable free agent market, especially if they go into a rebuild.
Detroit gains a slight cap advantage in this deal while also making room for Edvinsson to play this season.
DET
  1. Faksa, Radek
Additional Details:
Detroit gets a PK and face-off specialist while giving up their 6/7D. Detroit's PK has been on the rise from earlier in the season, as with their face-off stats, but adding Faksa should help that even more.
4.
CGY
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
  2. Lysell, Fabian
  3. 2025 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Lysell or Merkulov
Hanifin signs an extension in Boston, 8 Years x 7M.
2025 1st is Top 10 Protected.
BOS
  1. Hanifin, Noah ($2,475,000 retained)
Additional Details:
I could see Hanifin only giving Calgary a handful of team he would negotiate an extension with. I would expect maybe 5. My guesses would be Boston, New York Rangers, Vegas, New Jersey and Detroit.
5.
CGY
  1. 2024 5th round pick (COL)
  2. 2025 3rd round pick (NJD)
NJD
  1. Grzelcyk, Matt
Additional Details:
Any team needing a left handed defenseman. Picked Jersey since they lost Hamilton and have a couple young guys of playing. I feel they could use a little more veteran depth.
6.
CGY
For free. Washington trades Lankinen for a nice return. Takes Vanecek to try and gain value from him. He competes with Shepard and Stevenson for the back up for the rest of this season and next season.
    WSH
    1. Vanecek, Vitek
    Additional Details:
He's not a positive value asset. They can keep him and run 3 goalies or send one to the minors. Wolf needs to be getting starts.

Yeah lets trade our +13 Olli Maatta for a dump in Faska, Zero interest in Faska.

And FYI Calgary has Vladar and Wolf, So they don't need Vanecek

Does Lohrei look like he's gonna be a top 4 guy or no?

ya, i'm just not sure it'll be in boston. his size, skating, and offensive ability will make him a top four guy in the league, but the bruins demand a lot out of their d men defensively. remains to be seen if he'll be able to learn the position from that aspect. he definitely looked like he belonged in the NHL though.

We once had Krug as a top 4 staple. If his offensive upside is good enough and he takes over the point on the PP, he'll stay in Boston.

The Bruins haven't made a 1st round pick since Lysell in '21. They have to start making those picks, even if it is 28-32. I don't see them trading the '25 1st unless they think they can get into the 1st round in '24.

Krug didn't become a top four staple until he learned how to play in his own end. He needed time. So does Lohrei.

Just can't see a Vanecek-Caps reunion happening, even if a Lindgren trade does happen (which I assume it does). Caps will likely want to see what they have with Shepard before giving Stevenson the call, and I think they'd balk on Vanecek's contract. Stevenson is soon to be the guy and I don't believe when they move Lindgren, they'll want a Stevenson-Gibson tandem in Hershey to accelerate Gibson's development and give Stevenson the responsibility of a full time starter as his final test before the NHL, instead of the 1A-1B tandem he has with Shepard right now.
