TDL moves post Serg injury

Created by: JTBF81
Team: 2023-24 Tampa Bay Lightning
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 8, 2024
Published: Feb. 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After the unfortunate loss of Serg for the season, Tampa adds several players to bolster depth. Some of the acquired players they'd look to re-sign (Walker, Seeler, probably Novak), while Duclair would be a solid rental for this year. They give up some more picks, but if JBB feels that the team can still compete for Cups the next 2-3 years while the core remains in thelr window, he'll likely add as needed to give them that chance. The players taken from those picks won't help Tampa during this window anyway, and statistically speaking, privabaly half won't help the team at all.

Philly declines, the only pick we get in this upcoming draft is a 5th and the 1st is 2 years down the road. Not what Philly is looking for, hoping to be coming out of the rebuild in 2 to 3 years.

I can't lie I'm all for the delusion of thinking we've got a serious chance, I really am. The one thing that does bother me though is how empty the asset tank is after this, and almost all for rentals anyways.. we just simply dont have much room at all to get something going. We've got nothing of value and nothing to really get value. Have to play it super conservative or super smart.

Tampa can switch and do a 3rd this year. Seeler is the only piece they really need anyway as there are other RD to go after if they need one.

There is still value in picks and prospects, depending on who JBB is trying to acquire. Most of the rentals I have tried to acquire could be re-signed more Tham likely, so it's not losing the picks for one run only. As long as they get in they have a shot, and despite two expected poor games after a long break, they are still very much in contention.

I like Perbix as a fit for the Ducks, but I’m not so sure I want to spend a 3rd on him. How about a 4th?

Tampa looks for a 3rd, but if there's no takers maybe.

Excellent comments. At this stage, with the talent on this team and with Stamkos' potentially last season, dont they have to take another run at it ? Yes, they lost a massive piece in Sergachev (I am a Habs ) but they still have so many other high end pieces ... i think they have to go for it ... supersmart is the way to go about it , totally agree. One or 2 value pick ups and hope for the best.

Absolutely agree that we've got to go in on this season somehow, come too far and battled too hard to let go of it. Question is whether or not its better to ship off more draft assets or make a splash with one of our top guys in Gauthier/Howard to try and land a better player instead. Regardless it's a tough deadline and off-season for JBB and I don't want to be in his position one bit

I know people value first round picks, but typically, once you get past 20, its a crap shoot and you usually end up with 3rd-4th liners. If i was GM and i could trade late first rounders for NHL players, i would probably do it more often unless there was someone i really wanted. I know Gauthier is having a good season in the Q ... and i actually thought the Habs would draft him before trading the pick for newhook. Howard not sure how he is going but i would personally be more inclined to trade the first, unless Howard is falling apart. You get what you pay for at the end
