Depth Scoring - Smith for Sprong

Created by: TraeYoung
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 11, 2024
Published: Feb. 11, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think this is a more intriguing set of trades that are not as flashy but add depth scoring and more reliable D play.
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Berggren, Jonatan
  2. Sprong, Daniel
Additional Details:
Detroit adds a veteran winger for a playoff push who has one more year than Sprong on his contract. Smith plays a more responsible game which is valuable to a young Wings team. Berggren gets an opportunity to see more ice time in Pittsburgh while Detroit gets draft comp for both players value and youth.
DET
  1. Nylander, Alexander
  2. Smith, Reilly
  3. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
  4. 2025 4th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Nylander is here for the contract slots. He also helps Grand Rapids replace Berggren on the PP
2.
PIT
  1. Megna, Jaycob
Additional Details:
Not sure what Megna’s value would be seeing as he was just a waiver claim. However, his analytics and history with Karlsson are worth taking a chance on and a mid round pick seems reasonably fair. Shea is here for the contract slot.
CHI
  1. Shea, Ryan
  2. 2026 4th round pick (PIT)
3.
PIT
  1. Duclair, Anthony ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Duclair is having a down year so I do think Joseph and a mid round pick should be enough, however his speed and scoring history could find multiple suitors. Broz is a recent 2nd round pick who has had a solid year at Denver. I’d question his ability to play at an NHL pace, however. POJ is a fine young defenseman but he’s light and not a good PKer at this stage. His offense should shine on a better team but as of now he’s playing timid and not using what made him a good prospect before.
SJS
  1. Broz, Tristan [Reserve List]
  2. Joseph, Pierre-Olivier
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
Take a chance on Duclair for a D that’s fallen out of favor and a mid level prospect and a future pick.

I like the Megna add. Low risk, high reward type move and why not right? Either pair Karlsson with Pettersson or find an affordable defensive defenseman.

Sprong is never coming back to the penguins. He doesn't want to be here, and the penguins don't want him back.

If they wanted Megna they would have picked him off waivers.

Duclair isn't worth any of that.

The 4th is plenty for Megna. Hawks drafted Shea and let him go. Don't want him back.

Yeah. I was pretty surprised Shea never got a contract from CHI, but I highly doubt they have any interest in bringing him back into the fold.

As I recall, he graduated from Northeastern and he chose not to sign with the Hawks. I think he wanted to turn pro after the 19/20 season (his junior year) and Hawks didn't offer him a contract. So he played his senior year at NE and then chose free agency. I could be off on this but that's what I think happened.

I've only ever heard that coming from you before and I don't remember any sort of confirmation on that speculation, but it is certainly possible. If that is the case, though, CHI made the right choice.

laugh The last i looked Detroit has 7 points on the Pens, And even your 2 games in hand still makes it a 3 point lead and that's if we lose. Detroit declines you're not getting Berggren and Sprong for a bunch of scraps. Decline it's not even close.
