Changes Are Needed

Created by: GMcC
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 13, 2024
Published: Feb. 13, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the trades I have made in this team I’m not convinced it’s the answer to winning a Stanley Cup however, I believe the trades put the Maple Leafs in a better position now with added depth scoring, a more solid top line RD and some added puck movement from defence. The deals also put the team in a better position for following years by removing bad contracts and having more control financially.

There’s still over $1M left in cap space on this roster which could be utilised further however with the Maple Leafs not looking to trade their top prospects and my trades removing all of the early draft picks, a more complicated trade would probably be required which may need to wait until the trade deadline in case anyone new becomes available.

The Cap space leftover also allows for one more player to be called up from the Marlies as this roster only has 22 players currently.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (CAR)
CAR
  1. Jones, Martin
Additional Details:
With this deal I’m trying to sell high on Jones, there may be potential to get more if teams start fighting over him. This deal would have to wait though and see how Woll is when he comes back from injury.
2.
TOR
  1. 2025 4th round pick (NYR)
CHI
  1. Brodie, TJ ($1,000,000 retained)
  2. Reaves, Ryan
  3. Timmins, Conor
Additional Details:
I see this deal as Toronto clearing salary cap and contracts for the next couple of years. Chicago add usable players with term and possibly being able to flip Brodie at the trade deadline for more than the 4th given up in this trade, the Leafs also retain $1M to help with a future trade.
3.
TOR
  1. Duehr, Walker
  2. Tanev, Christopher
  3. 2024 4th round pick (NJD)
CGY
  1. Gregor, Noah
  2. 2024 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
With this trade Toronto would reluctantly have to give up the 1st round pick. Since the Leafs wouldn’t require salary retention I’ve added a 4th from the Flames, a conditional pick being the worst of their two available. Gregor and Duehr are just a swap from a left winger to right winger to balance out the fourth line and potentially give both players a fresh start in a new city, Duehr also has 1 more year left after this season at a manageable cap hit.
4.
ARI
  1. Kämpf, David
  2. 2024 6th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The reasoning behind this move is to give Toronto more flexibility by taking away 4 years of Kampf. This move gives Arizona a player with term at a reasonable cap hit while trading Voracek, a player who is owed $7.5M this season helps a team that struggles financially. Voracek’s value can easily be consumed by the Maple Leafs organisation.
5.
PHI
  1. Niemelä, Topi
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
  3. 2026 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
By clearing cap space and roster spots from earlier trades, this move allows the Maple Leafs to and a couple of Flyers who can hopefully add more than the outgoing players. The max rumoured ask for Walker is a 2nd and trade ideas of Frost and a pick for Robertson have led me to come up with what I see as fair value. I would like to keep Robertson in my Roster and have added Niemela, a right handed defence prospect instead.

I'm not sure where you saw that the top ask for Walker is a 2nd, but it is widely known that they want a 1st for Walker. For Frost, it's unlikely he gets moved. If he would it would have to be a massive overpay, he is playing extremely well rn.

I seen Frank Seravalli put up a graphic of all the defensive players who have been traded for a 2nd in previous years and the panel agreed that Walker doesn’t come close to any of them. With regards to Frost, he was a healthy scratch multiple times this season and played bottom 6 minutes, yes he’s playing much better now and that’s why I’ve offered a 1st for him.

Alright then, is Martin Jones better than Adin Hill was when he got sent to Vegas? Cause if memory serves correctly, Hill went for a 4th, which considering the differences between the 2, Jones would be lucky to get a 4th.

Guys like Vladar and Jones in all likelihood going to go for a 5th/6th rounder.

I believe the goalie market is busier this year though, maybe a 3rd is the ceiling for what Jones could bring for a desperate team. Also Jones has better stats than Vladar this season so I’d say he’s worth more as a rental.

Thats fine there are multiple people stating that Philly wants a 1st, and if you look at some of the deals from last trade deadline it's reasonable. Will he get that? Who knows, but after the two Calgary defensemen walker is easily the best available. Philly has the luxury of not needing to sell anyone. For Frost, he was scratched at the beginning of the year for holding out and Torts wasn't thrilled with his two way game. He and Torts had a heart to heart and he has been a mainstay in the top 6 ever since. He played more minutes than any other center in our last game. O you did offer a 1st for Frost, 2 years from now. Philly wants to be really kickstarting things in 2 years, they want 2024 picks.

To be honest the Blackhawks deal is a salary and roster space dump. I still think a 3rd is fair especially if Brodie is flipped at the deadline.

If Brodie sorts his game out between now and the deadline I think he could bring in a 2nd and 4th, potentially more if the Leafs retain some of his contract maybe up to $1M leaving the Blackhawks in a position where they could retain as well.

Honestly if you think anyone is giving the Leafs anything for that pile of garbage you are out of touch with current player values in relation to the league wide cap situation.

Additionally, to think Brodie can rebuild value in the 3+ weeks leading up to the TDL is delusional, the rest of the league has watched his game slip for the last season and a half, he was totally exposed in the playoffs last year… he’s washed. Three plus weeks of play cannot erase those images.

In order to get the deal done what would you suggest on top of what has been offered? Keep in mind that the 1st is the last pick the Leafs would have in the first two rounds for three years and they aren’t willing to move on any of their top prospects, Knies, Minten or Cowan.

Well I think you answered your own question the deal isn't happening. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but Philly won't just be selling for the sake of it. If the Leafs don't have the picks and don't want to part with any decent prospects then there isn't a deal here to be made.

It’s not as if Reaves and Timmins deals are in the multiple of millions, they’re deals that could be buried just not for the Leafs in the offseason. I have changed the trade to include retention on Brodie’s salary and dropped the 3rd to a 4th, hopefully making the potential to profit on the deal more achievable.

I’ve read a bit more on Frost’s turnaround this season and changed the trade, adding Niemela along with the picks. I think it’s the best the Leafs could do and what I think would be fair value.

I wouldn't pay a 3rd for Brodie by himself. He is an aging in decline dman who is a pending UFA. If TOR can't find a team to pay for him and they need the cap space, to CHI, he is a cap dump. CHI are not buyers, and they are not making trades predicated on "maybe we can flip the player in the next 2 weeks before the trade deadline." However, if you CAN find a team willing to pay for Brodie, CHI would be willing to retain for the small price of a 3rd round pick. Reaves is also a cap dump, which I don't think I need to explain. Timmins has no value, and you might even be able to argue he is also a cap dump, albeit a relatively negligible one.

Nothing in that trade is worth paying anything for, to a rebuilding team. So, if you are resorting to calling CHI in order to create cap space, you are going to have to pay for it. Make all the arguments you want, but I highly doubt CHI bites. It simply just makes no sense for them.

Your whole argument for Chicago to do this deal is they could trade a 4th round pick now for Brodie and in the next three weeks his play will improve dramatically enough that the Hawks can then turnaround and trade him for a 3rd round pick or better… do you not see how highly unlikely that is? The risk to the Hawks?

Furthermore you are asking Chicago to eat two more season of Reaves contract at $1.35m, so $2.7m in total and one more season of Timmins at $1.1m for a combined cash outlay of $3.8m. So it is “multiple of millions” and that doesn’t even include the 20 - 25% of the remaining salary for this season which would push the cost to Chicago over $5m! All for the hope and a prayer that they can flip Brodie for a pick better than the 4th rounder you want in return.

My counter offer would be this:

To Chicago - Brodie ($1m retained), Reaves, Timmins and Toronto’s 2025 1st round pick.

To Toronto - Connor Bedard’s autographed sweaty jockstrap

I'm not sure Connor would agree to sign it while it is still sweaty.

This deal is actually already in the works. He going to embroider his signature instead of signing it, that way it's a little more permanent, then wear it in his first game back, immediately put it in a ziplock bag after the game, and then give it to Kyle Davidson for the purpose of a trade.
