I think Hawks decline on both of these proposals, they have bottom of the roster players, they difference makers. The combined cap hit for Kampf and Reaves is $3.75m for the next two seasons and then $2.4m for one additional year of Kampf, I don’t see a 3rd and 5th round pick while sending a 7th back is enticing enough for Chicago to agree.

When you put it like that it certainly sounds a lot worse, but the way I think of it is Reaves contract is almost fully buriable (would only be 200 000 on the cap in the AHL) which is why I think it would only cost a 5th to move him. Kampf is still at the very least a solid 4th line center and an excellent penalty killer who could legitimately help the Hawks by the time they are contenders again on a slightly overpaid but not unreasonable cap.

The money still has to be paid and in your proposal the Hawks would be inheriting close to $10m in future payments

Owners don’t become rich by wasting their money, they want value… Reaves is a total waste of a good pair of skates. Kampf as you said is a good 4th line centre but is overpaid by about $1m per season.

If you want Mangiapane he'll cost more than that and you won't be getting retention either.

Reaves at this point is pretty much useless as a player. He's washed. Being owed $2.7m over the next 2 years, he takes that 3rd in the Kampf deal to dump. As for Kampf, what he does well the Hawks have covered already with younger, cheaper players. Hawks don't need more bottom 6 defensive minded PK guys. Hawks probably don't take Kampf on unless a 2nd or equivalent prospect is included to cover his cap hit. I also doubt the Hawks are taking on any 3 year contract commitments at this point for anything less than a 2nd anyway.
